Problem Description |
An overrun condition on the HSSI port adapters for the Cisco 7200 and Cisco 7500 systems was identified.
As of November 17, 1997, Cisco released the PA-2H Rev. B. revised HSSI port adapters that corrected the overrun condition and dramatically improve performance under bursty and sustained traffic loads. Cisco strongly recommends that all installed PA-H and PA-2H port adapters be upgraded to the revised versions PA-H Rev. B and PA-2H Rev. B respectively. Revised PA-H and PA-2H port adapters can be identifiable by the text "Rev. B" in the lower-right corner of the front panel label. The minimum Cisco IOS for the PA-H Rev. B and PA-2H Rev. B is as follows:

Problem Symptoms |
During an investigation of performance problems on the HSSI port adapters, a problem with an ASIC on the PA-H and PA-2H port adapters was discovered. Both the PA-H and PA-2H were put on line stop in early May, 1997 and a mandatory recall program initiated.
Packet loss of up to .1% (overruns) has been observed resulting from this ASIC problem on the HSSI port adapters. In rare circumstances this overrun condition has been observed to precipitate packet-handling anomalies. This condition has no other affect on system-level operation. If you are a registered CCO user and you have logged in, you can view the bug details.

Workaround/Solution |
Hardware and software changes have been made to the PA-H and PA-2H HSSI Port Adapters which correct the port adapter specific condition. Cisco strongly recommends that customers upgrade all PA-H and PA-2H HSSI port adapters.
Revised PA-H and PA-2H port adapters can be distinguished by the text "Rev. B" in the lower right-hand corner of the label. In addition, the Cisco IOS commands show diag and show ver can be used to identify PA-H cards installed in a chassis and the system software level. Revised PA-H and PA-2H port adapters can be identified by the following numbers:
Beginning November 17, 1997, customers may request replacement PA-H or PA-2H HSSI Port Adapters on a port-for-port basis at no charge. |

Configuration Limitations |
The PA-H and PA-2H were originally released with maximum configuration guidelines. These guidelines limit the maximum number of PA-H or PA-2H cards that can be placed in a chassis as shown below:
In the Cisco 7200 series, HSSI port adapters are classified as a high speed port adapters. There is a limit of three high speed port adapters in a single Cisco 7200. |
||||||||||||||||||
Physical Replacement of Port Adapters |
On the Cisco 7200 series, the PA-H, PA-2H, port adapters are hot-swappable and can be replaced with a PA-H Rev. B or PA-2H Rev. B without turning off the system. On the Cisco 7500 series, port adapter OIR is not supported, and the entire VIP card must be removed prior to replacing a port adapter.
For more information on how to replace a PA-H or PA-2H port adapter, please read "PA-H HSSI Port Adapter Installation and Configuration" or " PA-2H Dual-Port HSSI Port Adapter Installation and Configuration". |
