Introduction
This document describes how to create a new routing rule in failover systems. The creation of this new routing rule allows Cisco Unity subscribers to hear the subscriber sign-in conversation instead of the external caller greeting when an attempt is made to access their voice messages while the primary server is down.
Prerequisites
Requirements
There are no specific requirements for this document.
Components Used
The information in this document is based on these software versions:
-
Cisco Unity Versions 3.1(2) and 3.1(3) and later (includes 4.x)
The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Create a New Routing Rule in Failover Systems
Note: If the Cisco Unity system is integrated with Cisco CallManager version 3.2(2x) or later, or with a Cisco SIP proxy server, do not perform this procedure. The reason is that the phone systems automatically forward calls to the secondary server when it becomes active.
This section describes how to create a new routing rule for failover, so that subscribers can directly log on to Cisco Unity on the secondary server after failover. When subscribers press the phone button to listen to messages, they hear the subscriber logon conversation instead of the external caller greeting.
Complete these steps on the applicable server, based on the Cisco Unity version installed:
|
Cisco Unity 3.1(2) |
Complete these steps only after you have run the failover configuration wizard on both servers, and only on the secondary server when it is active. |
|
Cisco Unity 3.1(3) or later |
Complete these steps only after you have run the failover configuration wizard on both servers, and only on the primary server when it is active. |
|
Cisco Unity 4.x |
Create the routing rule only after you have run the failover configuration wizard on both the primary and secondary servers. Do the procedure only on the primary server when it is active. |
-
From the appropriate Cisco Unity server, open the Cisco Unity Administrator.
-
Select Call Management > Call Routing > Forwarded Calls.
-
Click Add in order to add a new routing rule.
-
Enter a name for the rule and click Add.
-
Enter these values for the rule:
-
Status—Enabled
-
Call Type—Both
-
Dialed Number (DNIS)—The voice mail pilot number for the voice mail ports group used on the primary Cisco Unity server. Typically, if the voice mail ports are numbered 7000-7047, the voice mail pilot number is 7000 and is the number you enter for the DNIS.
-
Send Call to—Attempt Sign-in
Note: Do not change the order of the rules.
-
-
Click Save.
Note: This rule is stored in the SQL Server database and replicated to the secondary server.
-
For the changes to take effect, stop and restart Cisco Unity on the primary server. Then, stop and restart Cisco Unity on the secondary server.
Verify the Result
Complete these steps in order to verify that the rule is in effect.
-
Stop Cisco Unity on the primary server.
-
Press the voice messages key on the phone that is associated with a subscriber.
Cisco Unity plays the subscriber sign-in conversation.
-
Press the voice messages key on a phone that is not associated with a subscriber.
Cisco Unity plays the external caller greeting.
