Introduction

Cisco MeetingPlace Server 5.2 introduced the support for Extended Echo Cancellation. When enabled, echo up to 350 ms can be eliminated. If you do not enable Extended Echo Cancellation, Cisco MeetingPlace can be configured to cancel echo up to 128 ms.

Prerequisites

Requirements

There are no specific requirements for this document.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:

  • MeetingPlace Audio Server 8106 (all versions)

  • MeetingPlace Audio Server 8112 (releases 5.2 and later)

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Enable Extended Echo Canceller

Complete these steps:

  1. Log in to the Cisco MeetingPlace Audio Server as a superuser. If you do not have the superuser login information, open a Service Request with Cisco Technical Support to have the changes applied.

  2. Issue the configport -g n command, where n is the port group on which you want to enable Extended Echo Cancellation.

Note: The default port group is 0 for T1 channel associated signaling (CAS), 1 for IP, 2 for E1, and 3 for T1 PRI.

    mcadoo:csc$ configport -g 1

  3. At the Enter configuration command prompt, enter 3 to modify a parameter. When prompted to enter the parameter number, enter 17. When prompted to enter the new value, enter 8788h.

Note: Do not change parameter 18, Ext Echo 2.

    Enter parameter number [0..55] : 17

    Enter new value in hex

  4. Enter x to exit the configport program.

  5. Repeat Steps 2, 3, and 4 for any other port group on which you would like to enable Extended Echo Cancellation.

  6. While a restart is recommended to enable the new settings, it is not necessary if the system is completely idle. If the system is idle, each new call takes the change.

Note: You do not need to change any other Echo Control parameters.

Disable Extended Echo Canceller

Complete these steps:

  1. If the Extended Echo Canceller needs to be disabled, change configport parameter 17 back to 0788h for all affected port groups.

  2. A restart is recommended unless the system is completely idle. If the system is idle, each new call takes the change.

Impact

Major side effects are not expected when you turn on Extended Echo Cancellation. Some users, particularly those on IP phones or overseas calls, may hear echo a few seconds longer than usual. This may generate some calls to support. The echo should go away after a short time. The length of time the Extended Echo Canceller takes to detect the echo before it can cancel it is shown here:

Caller's Echo tail Convergence Time
------------------ ----------------
0 to 128 ms Same as R5.1: ~50 ms
128 to 256 ms 50 ms to 4 sec
256 to 350 ms 50 ms to 8 sec
