Introduction

When multiple network interface cards (NICs) exist on a Windows NT or Windows 2000 server, the Ethernet address for the Gateway System Integrity Manager (GWSIM) should always be set to the Ethernet address of the primary NIC. This address is obtained by the GWSIM during installation and is used only for authentication during the login process. It has nothing to do with network communications. The installation program queries the system programmatically with the ipconfig /all command and uses the Ethernet address of the first NIC listed by that command.

Once this value is set, it should only change when the primary NIC is changed. In the Cisco MeetingPlace server, you can issue the net command to view the Ethernet address of the gateways, but you should not issue the net command to change their Ethernet address. If you need to change the primary NIC, then you should follow this procedure:

1. Use the Delete Unit button in GWSIM Configuration to delete the gateway unit.

2. Change the primary NIC.

3. Use the Add Unit button in GWSIM Configuration to add the gateway unit.

The procedures in this document show how to determine which NIC is the primary NIC and show how to set a NIC to be the primary NIC on a Windows NT or Windows 2000 server. This document also shows an example of how to set up a gateway that contains many components:

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

How to Determine and Set the Primary NIC on a Windows NT Server

Use this procedure to determine and set the primary NIC on a Windows NT Server:

1. Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon and choose Properties.

2. Click the Bindings tab.

3. In the Show Bindings for drop-down list, choose All Adapters.

4. Ensure that the primary NIC is listed first.

   You can click the Move Up or Move Down buttons to arrange the adapters and select your primary NIC.

5. From a DOS prompt, issue the ipconfig /all command to verify that your selected primary NIC appears first in the list.

How to Determine and Set the Primary NIC on a Windows 2000 Server

Use this procedure to determine and set the primary NIC on a Windows 2000 Server:

1. Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon and choose Properties.

2. From the menu of the Network and Dial-up Connections window, choose Advanced > Advanced Settings.

3. On the Adapter and Binding tabs, in the Connections area, ensure that the primary NIC is listed first.

   You can click the Move Up or Move Down buttons to arrange the adapters and select your primary NIC.

4. From a DOS prompt, issue the ipconfig /all command to verify that your selected primary NIC appears first in the list.

Sample Configuration

In this example, Cisco MeetingPlace IP and Cisco MeetingPlace Web are both installed on a Windows NT System with two NICs. Cisco MeetingPlace IP must use the primary IP address (NIC) for H.323 communication with Cisco CallManager. Thus, Cisco MeetingPlace Web can not use the same primary IP address as Cisco MeetingPlace IP, or there are conflicts in H.323 traffic. Therefore, the IP address for Cisco MeetingPlace Web should be the IP address of the second NIC.

This is a description of such a configuration:

• The IP address of the primary NIC is 192.23.24.5.

  The Ethernet address of the primary NIC is 00-B0-D0-54-89-2C.

• The IP address of the secondary NIC is 128.23.20.8.

  The Ethernet address of the secondary NIC is 00-C0-E0-45-98-C2.

1. Cisco MeetingPlace IP uses the IP address of the primary NIC (192.23.24.5).

2. In Internet Information Services (IIS), on the Web Site tab of the Web Site Properties dialog box, the IP address is set to the secondary IP address (128.23.20.8).

3. In MeetingPlace Gateway Configuration, on the Agent Service tab, the Local Machine Known As field is set to Fixed and uses the IP address of the secondary NIC (128.23.20.8).

4. The GWSIM Configuration uses the Ethernet address of the primary NIC (00-B0-D0-54-89-2C).
