Introduction
This document describes software functions and features on Cisco BPX 8600 switches. Issue the cnfswfunc command to enable or disable software functions. The software functions are password-protected. To enable or disable software functions, see the Before You Contact the Cisco Technical Support section of this document.
Prerequisites
Requirements
There are no specific prerequisites for this document.
Components Used
The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:
-
All BPX 8600 hardware platforms that include the 8620, 8650, and 8680.
-
WAN switch software release 9.3 and later releases (earlier releases do not always have all the software functions that are described in the document).
Conventions
For more information on document conventions, refer to the Cisco Technical Tips Conventions.
Before You Contact the Cisco Technical Support
Software functions are licensed features. Some need to be purchased per node or card before you can activate or enable them. Your Cisco sales or account representative is your major point of contact when you need to enable or disable a software function feature.
You need a special password to enable any software function, which is confidential to Cisco personnel only. You can choose one of these methods to enable or disable a software function:
-
Ask your Cisco representative to enable or disable the function. The Cisco representative needs local or remote access to your switch to enable or disable software functions.
-
If it is not possible to contact your Cisco representative, then contact Cisco Technical Support. The Cisco Technical Support engineer needs this information to enable or disable software functions:
-
Remote access to the node
-
If the software function needs to be purchased, then you must provide either the contact information of your Cisco representative or the proof of purchase for the software function (for example, the Purchase Order details).
-
BPX Software Functions
This section describes the software functions on BPX 8600 switches.
Issue the cnfswfunc command on the BPX to enable and disable the software functions shown in this command output:
b2 TRM Service BPX 8620 9.3.11 Nov. 8 2001 05:16 PDT
Index Status Function
1 Enabled Configuration Save/Restore
2 Enabled Foresight
3 Disabled Multiple VTs (1 session enabled)
4 Disabled Virtual Trunks
5 Enabled ABR standard with VSVD
6 Disabled Priority Bumping
7 Disabled Virtual Ports
Last Command: cnfswfunc
Access the CCO ordering tool for BPX 8600 license codes. In the event of discrepancies, the Cisco Connection Online ordering tool has precedence over this document.
The software functions identified in the cnfswfunc command output for the BPX mentioned are described in further detail in this document.
Configuration Save and Restore
The Configuration save and restore software function is an advantage only when the Cisco WAN Manager (CWM) management system is used for operation, administration, and maintenance of a WAN-multiservice network. These options are available:
-
Enabled = It is possible for the configuration stored in the non-volatile memory of the WAN switch to be transferred to the CWM workstation, and the previously-saved configuration restored.
Purchase this license to enable this software function:
BPX Hardware Platform
Part Number
All BPX hardware platforms
BPX-CRS
For detailed save and restore configuration procedures, refer to Saving and Restoring Configurations on IPX, IGX, and BPX Nodes.
-
Disabled = The Configuration save and restore is not available error message is displayed when you try to save configurations.
ForeSight
The ForeSight software function allows you to enable or disable the Cisco proprietary mechanism for network congestion control and bandwidth optimization. These options are available:
-
Enabled = Enables ForeSight—a dynamic closed-loop, rate-based, congestion management feature that yields bandwidth savings, compared to non-ForeSight equipped trunks, when bursty data is transmitted across cell-based networks.
-
Disabled = The Foresight is not available on this system error message is displayed when you try to add a connection with ForeSight.
The ForeSight software function is provided to you without purchase.
Multiple Virtual Terminals (VTs) - (1 Session Enabled)
The Multiple VTs software function allows you to enable or disable the ability to access a node from any other node in the network. These options are available:
-
Enabled = Allows you to issue the vt command to enable up to six simultaneous VT sessions so you can access a node from any other node in the network.
Purchase this license to enable this software function:
BPX Hardware Platform
Part Number
All BPX hardware platforms
BPX-MUC
-
Disabled = Allows one VT session to be established to a node.
Virtual Trunks
The Virtual Trunks software function allows you to configure multiple virtual trunks on the same physical port and to connect different nodes. A virtual trunk is a trunk defined over a public ATM service. The trunk does not exist as a physical line in the network. Therefore this does not require a dedicated physical line to connect two nodes. For more information on virtual trunking, refer to Chapter 25: Configuring BXM Virtual Trunks of the Cisco BPX 8600 Series Installation and Configuration Guide. These options are available:
-
Enabled = Allows virtual trunks in a network.
Purchase this license, per node, to enable this software function:
BPX Hardware Platform
Part Number
All BPX hardware platforms
BPX-VT
-
Disabled = The Virtual trunking feature is not enabled error message is displayed when you try to add a virtual trunk.
Access the CCO ordering tool for part numbers, information about prices, or to order the Virtual Trunks software function.
ABR Standard with VSVD
The Available Bit Rate (ABR) Standard with Virtual Source Virtual Destination (VSVD) software function is the ATM Forum standard for network congestion control, as opposed to the Cisco proprietary ForeSight congestion control mechanism, (see the ForeSight section of this document). It is a standard practice to use either all ABR VSVD or all ForeSight on a network. These options are available:
-
Enabled = Allows you to use the ABR Standard withVSVD software function.
-
Disabled = Does not allow you to use the ABR Standard with VSVD software function.
The ABR Standard with VSVD software function is provided to you without purchase.
Priority Bumping
The Priority Bumping software function is a class of service (CoS)-based network-wide feature available in Switch Software Release 9.3, or later releases. These options are available:
-
Enabled = Allows high priority connections (classified more important with a lower CoS value) to bump lower priority connections (classified less important with a higher CoS value) and to route under-diminished network resources (for example, bandwidth, and logical channel numbers (LCNs) ).
Issue the Service level cnfswfunc command to activate the software function, and issue the SuperUser level cnfbmpparm command to enable this software function on any node in the network.
Purchase this license, per node, to enable this software function:
BPX Hardware Platform
Part Number
All BPX hardware platforms
BPX-PRBUMP
-
Disabled = If the software function is not activated before the function is enabled with the cnfbmpparm command, no error message is displayed, but bumping of connections does not take effect.
For more information on Priority Bumping, refer to Update to the Cisco IGX 8400 Series Installation and Configuration Guide and Cisco IGX 8400 Series Reference Guide. For configuration information, refer to Optimizing Traffic Routing and Bandwidth.
Access the CCO ordering tool for part numbers, information about prices, or to order the Priority Bumping software function.
Virtual Ports
The Virtual Ports software function enables or disables the ability to assign one or more virtual ports per physical port interface and provides the ability to connect ATM edge devices or CPE devices indirectly through an ATM network. Virtual ports are supported only on the BXM card sets and are available in the Cisco Switch Software Release 9.3.05, or later releases. These options are available:
-
Enabled = Allows the Virtual Ports software function.
-
Disabled = Does not allow the Virtual Ports software function. The Virtual Port feature is not enabled error message is displayed if you try to add a virtual port.
The Virtual Ports software function is provided to you without purchase.
