Introduction

This document explains what to do if a mediator no longer receives events after you have installed the latest patch supplied by Micromuse.

Prerequisites

Requirements

There are no specific requirements for this document.

Components Used

The information in this document applies to all versions of Cisco Info Center.

Problem

Sometimes a mediator no longer receives events after you install the latest patch supplied by Micromuse.

These mediators can have this problem:

  • Operator Communication Facility Probe: nco_p_opcom

  • SunNet Manager Log Probe: nco_p_snmlog

  • Cabletron Spectrum Probe: nco_p_spectrum

  • Syslog Probe: nco_p_syslog

  • HP Network Node Manager Probe: nco_p_nnm4, nco_p_nnm5 & nco_p_nnm6

Solution

A Cisco Info Center installation contains modified rules files. These files control how events are processed.

When a new Micromuse patch is installed for these mediators, it is possible that the .props and .rules files are replaced by a new version. You can check this by looking at the README file that is supplied with the patch. Here is an example:

In the README file, the patch4 for the nnm6 mediator (omnibus-3.4-solaris2-probe-nnm6_4) shows:

Release IDs:

  • probes/solaris2/nnm6.props: 1.5

  • probes/solaris2/nnm6.rules: 1.7.1.4

  • probes/solaris2/nco_p_nnm6: 1.35.1.7.1.1.1.2

From this, you can see that the props, rules, and binary files have been replaced.

Because this patch comes from Micromuse, the rules file contains the default, non-Cisco-tuned, rules file. As a result, the new rules file will contain certain variables that are not used by Cisco Info Center. Therefore, Cisco recommends that you make a back-up of the rules and props files before you install a patch.

In case no back-up has been made, check the rules file for the occurrence of the NodeAlias variable. If present, replace every occurrence of NodeAlias with the NEName variable. Cisco Info Center uses NEName, and not the Micromuse implementation, NodeAlias.

After you make the change, restart the mediator.
