Early Deployment (ED) Release Summary
Description |
Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.0W5(x) (WAN Business Unit release) is slated to be released in January 1999. It is based on the Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0 main line to deliver Enterprise Line of Business (ELB) functionality on the LightStream 1010 and the Catalyst 8510 platforms. Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(1)W5 will also introduce support and features of the CH-OC12.
Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0W5 will be directly pulled from Cisco IOS 12.0 and will probably maintain synchronization with its parent. Subsequent releases will be named as follows:
The x, y, and z in the parentheses following W5 indicate the maintenance level of the release. |
Target Market |
The ELB workgroup is the target market for this release. |
Product Support |
LightStream 1010 and Catalyst 8510 images are ls1010-wp-mz.120-1a.W5.5b.bin and cat8510m-wp-mz.120-1a.W5.5b.bin. |

Product/Feature Integration |
Subsequent maintenance releases will introduce different levels of functionality. |
Maintenance Releases |
Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0W5 will deliver maintenance releases; however, the regularity of the releases is yet to be determined. |
Interim Builds |
The ELB workgroup follows a slightly different release mechanism. Interims are build on an as-needed basis. |
Maintenance Release Synchronization Points |
Maintenance releases are provided on a timely basis; however, ELB maintenance releases do not necessarily synchronize to the parent Cisco IOS. The image name indicates the last synchronization point. For example, Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(1a)W5XX has synchronized to Cisco IOS 12.0(1a). |
Recommended Migration |
For the most part, Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(x)WA4 functionality will be in Cisco IOS 12.0W5, in addition to the specific features of Cisco IOS 12.0W5.
If currently using Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(x)WAy(x), the recommended upgrade path is Cisco IOS 12.0(x)W5. The migration path is the logical superseding software. The uniqueness of each network requires that customers verify support for hardware, features, and protocols prior to a massive network upgrade. For more information, see the Projected Release Dates for Cisco IOS Software Product Bulletin. |
Year 2000 (Y2K) Compliant |
Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0W5 is Y2K compliant. |

Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0W5 will not achieve GD status. Cisco IOS 11.3(x)WA will not achieve GD status. |
Life Cycle |
The Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0W5 release train will be supported for the standard two years. For more information, see the following pages: |
