Early Deployment (ED) Release Summary

Description

Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.0(2)XD is a short-term release introducing support for the ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) Voice Interface Controller (VIC), which provides narrow band digital voice connectivity in Cisco's Voice over IP (VoIP) and Voice over Frame Relay (VoFR) environments. It is another VIC which supplements the current array of available Cisco VICs. The ISDN BRI VIC is Cisco's first available digital VIC. It operates within the Voice Network Module on Cisco 26xx and 36xx (and future) platforms. The Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(2)XD release also introduces the eight Primary Rate Interface (PRI) card on the Cisco 5300, and doubles its density from four to eight E1/T1s plus four T1 serial interfaces and 240 modems.

This short Cisco IOS Software release contains new drivers for the serial interfaces (Mueslix driver), new NEAT, E1/T1, firmware for the new Framer chips, and general upscaling for the interfaces. Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(2)XD features and functionality will merge into Cisco IOS 12.0(3)T and evolve with the Cisco IOS 12.0T train. For more information, see the following pages:

Product/Feature Integration

New features are added to the maintenance releases of Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(2)XD. For more information, see the following pages:

Maintenance Releases

Cisco IOS X releases (short-lived) do not provide maintenances. They fold back into the Cisco IOS Software 12.0T Technology train. Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(2.x)T interim builds will be available to customers (through DE or TAC) to fix bugs found in Cisco IOS 12.0(2)XD.

Interim Builds

Interim builds are not recommended and are not fully tested. Customers will only be provided with interim builds when a critical defect renders the maintenance release unusable.

7-week maintenance cycle: One-time release. Fixes provided in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(3)T or later.
13-week maintenance cycle: Not applicable

Maintenance Release Synchronization Points

Not applicable. For more information, see the Projected Release Dates for Cisco IOS Software Product Bulletin.

Recommended Migration

If currently using Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(2)XD, the recommended upgrade path is Cisco IOS 12.0(3)T or later.

The migration path is the logical superseding software. The uniqueness of each network requires that customers verify support for hardware, features, and protocols prior to a massive network upgrade. For more information, see the Projected Release Dates for Cisco IOS Software Product Bulletin.

Year 2000 (Y2K) Compliant

Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(2)XD is Y2K compliant.

General Deployment (GD) Plan

Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0(2)XD will not achieve GD status.
