Early Deployment (ED) Release Summary

Description

 Cisco IOS® Software Release 11.3(2)WA4 delivers Multilayer Switching (MLS) functionality on the Cisco IOS 11.3(2) base code. Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(2)WA4(x) is supported on the following platforms:
  • Cisco Catalyst 5000 series Route Switch Modules (RSMs)
  • Cisco 4500 and Cisco 4700 routers
  • Cisco 7200 and Cisco 7500 routers
  • LightStream 1010 family of switches
This release and all subsequent Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(x)WA4(x) releases will include switching enhancements and module support on the platforms listed above.

Note that Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(3)WA4(5) introduces several new features including Multiprotocol over ATM (MPOA).

MLS consists of the following:

  • Catalyst 5000 series multilayer LAN switches.
  • Catalyst 5000 series RSMs providing Cisco IOS-based multiprotocol routing and network services.
  • The NetFlow Feature Card (NFFC) in the Cisco 4500, Cisco 4700, Cisco 7200, and Cisco 7500 series routers is a modular feature card upgrade for the Catalyst 5000 series Supervisor Engine III to provide Layer 3 switching.

  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(2a)WA4(4) was released on June 11, 1998, for LightStream 1010 and Route/Switch Processor (RSP) images.
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(2.5) WA4(4m) for the digital modem card carrier NM (LAN emulation (LANE), permanent virtual circuit (PVC) shaping) was released on June 15, 1998.
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(2a)WA4(4a) was released on July 7, 1998.
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(3)WA4(5), with support for Enhanced Address Recognition Logic 2 (EARL2) and MPOA, was released on July 24, 1998.
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.2(15)WA3(6) was released on August 15, 1998.
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(3a)WA4(6) was released on August 15, 1998.
  • Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(4)WA4(7) was released on September 11, 1998.

Interim Builds

 Interim builds are not recommended and are not fully tested. Customers will only be provided with interim builds when a critical defect renders the maintenance release unusable.

7-week maintenance cycle: Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3 uses a 7-week release model. A maintenance release is delivered once every seven weeks. An interim build is executed once a week.
13-week maintenance cycle: Not applicable

Maintenance Release Synchronization Points

Recommended Migration

 Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(x)WA4 features were ported to Cisco IOS 12.0W5 in late 1998.

Year 2000 (Y2K) Compliant

 Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3WA is Y2K compliant.

General Deployment (GD) Plan

 Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3(x)WA will not achieve GD status.

Life Cycle

 The Cisco IOS Software Release 11.3WA release train will be supported for 16 months. It is slated for End of Engineering in the September 1999 time frame.
