Read Me First—CiscoWorks2000 VPN/Security Management Solution Bundle

The CiscoWorks2000 VPN/Security Management Solution (VMS) bundle is a web-based interface for monitoring and troubleshooting enterprise Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and an application for configuring and monitoring firewall security.

The VMS bundle supports monitoring of VPNs on the following:

  • Cisco VPN 3000 Concentrator running the 2.5.2f image or later
  • Cisco 7100 and 7200 series routers running Cisco IOS version 12.1(5a)E or later

The VMS bundle also supports security management on the following:

  • Cisco PIX Firewall
  • Cisco Intrusion Detection Sensor (IDS) devices
    • Note   The CSPM Lite application included in the VMS bundle is licensed to support a particular number of devices. Please refer to the device license label on the Cisco Security Policy Manager (CSPM) Lite sub-box for information on the number of devices supported by the CSPM Lite application.

The VMS bundle supports monitoring of the following protocols:

  • IPSec
  • IKE
  • L2TP
  • PPTP

Solaris 2.6 and 2.7 Support

The VMS bundle is supported on both Solaris 2.6 and 2.7.

Note   CiscoWorks2000 VPN/Security Management Solution Quick Start Guide states that the VMS bundle is supported on Solaris 2.7 only. This information is incomplete. The VMS bundle is supported on both Solaris 2.6 and 2.7.

What the Bundle Contains

Table 1 lists the contents of the VMS bundle.

Note   In addition to the enclosed paper documents, PDF versions of product documentation are available on the product CDs. It might be beneficial to read the installation instructions for individual products and print the relevant documentation before starting the installation. You must have Adobe Acrobat 4.0 installed to view the PDF files.

Product Update

Throughout the VMS bundle documentation, references are made to CSPM (Cisco Secure Policy Manager) 2.2. At time of shipment we were able to replace CSPM 2.2 with a newer version, CSPM 2.3. Please substitute written references to CSPM 2.2 with CSPM 2.3.

Installation Prerequisites

You can install the VMS bundle on:

  • Windows 2000 or Windows NT
  • Solaris
    • Note   CSPM Lite can be installed only on Windows NT.

See the hard copy of the CiscoWorks2000 VPN/Security Management Solution Quick Start Guide for installing and setting up a typical installation. For custom installation and additional information, see the installation guides shipped with each CD.

Note   PDF versions of the installation guides are available on the CDs. You must have Adobe Acrobat 4.0 installed to view the PDF files.

Installing the VMS Bundle

Before you begin installation, verify your:

Server and Client Requirements

Verify that your environment meets the minimum server and client requirements. See the following documents for detailed information about server and client requirements, as they apply to your particular installation option:

  • CiscoWorks2000 VPN/Security Management Solution Quick Start Guide
  • Installing VPN Monitor on Windows 2000, Windows NT, and Solaris
  • Cisco Secure Policy Manager Installation Guide Version 2.3. (This document can be found on the CSPM product CD.)

Installation Options

There are two options for installing the VMS bundle. Figure 1 shows the installation options and Table 2 has details about these options.

Provides same features as Option One, but with additional components such as basic syslog reporting, config reporting, and software management.
1 If installed, provides the firewall security configuration and monitoring feature. CSPM Lite can be installed only on Windows NT.
Note    VPN Monitor requires specific versions of CD One and CD Two or Resource Manager Essentials. If you try to install VPN Monitor on previous versions of these products, you will get an error message prompting you to upgrade. You must upgrade to the required software version and restart the installation.

Installation Order

Table 3 summarizes the installation steps. Perform the steps in the specified order for the option you have chosen.
