Background Information
Novell has acknowledged a problem with the use of PBURST on low-speed lines (9600 bps). The problem concerns the basic algorithm used by PBURST to time out lost blocks. The symptoms are file transfers that are slower than expected and higher line loading due to excessive retransmissions. Novell is working on a fix, but cannot confirm an availability date.
Several copies of PBURST are in existence. NSS uses the files from the RUNTIME enhancements diskette. They are identified as follows:
PBURST.NLM 12,938 1/17/92 2:36 pm
BNETX.COM 58,468 2/11/92 4:26 pm
We have achieved these results when PBURST is used:
-
LAN²LAN without compression -- real advantages start higher than 128 Kbps
-
LAN²LAN with compression -- real advantages available at 38.4 Kbps and higher
-
LAN²LAN/X.25 -- real advantages at 9600 bps and higher
PBURST is a definite speed-up for single file transfers in many circumstances. However, use PBURST with caution at lower speeds. If you experience poor results or high line loading, we suggest you stop using PBURST until a revised file is available.
