Introduction

Several anomalies have been discovered when using NE2000-compatible NIC adapters with the NCR Winbond 92C390 chip. These NCR chips, sold as National 8390-compatible chips, do not conform entirely to the National 8390 specification. This can cause the LAN²LAN to hang. NCR has acknowledged the problem with the chip in the LAN²LAN and other platforms. No solution has been proposed by NCR. This problem might not apply to workstations using NE2000-compatible NIC adapters. Cisco recommends that NE2000 compatible NIC adapters with NCR Winbond chipsets not be used in the LAN²LAN.
