Cisco IOS Software Support Now Available
for Cisco Aironet 1200 Series Access Point


Cisco Systems is pleased to announce Cisco IOS® Software support for Cisco® Aironet® 1200 Series access points and updates to Cisco IOS Software for the Cisco Aironet 1100 Series access point.

The new Cisco Aironet 1200 Series platform, AIR-AP1210, features Cisco IOS Software support with Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(8)JA. This Cisco IOS Software release contains all of the features delivered in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(4)JA, released in October 2002 for the Cisco Aironet 1100 Series access point, as well as the new features described below.

The AIR-AP1210 and the bundled versions AIR-AP1230B-X1-K9 and AIR-AP1230A-X*-K9 are orderable on February 20, 2003 with first customer ship (FCS) scheduled for February 24, 2003. Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(8)JA will be loaded on to the Cisco Aironet AIR-AP1210 platform and AIR-AP1230 bundles at the factory. This software release can also be downloaded from the Cisco IOS Software Center for the Cisco Aironet 1100 Series access point.

The new Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(8)JA also provides support for Terminal Access Controller Access Control System Plus (TACACS+), a security application that provides centralized validation of users attempting to gain access to an access point. A TACACS+ server must be configured before configuring TACACS+ features on the access point.

Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(8)JA can be downloaded from the Cisco IOS Software Center. Users must login and have cryptographic access to download this software. Q. What is the difference between the AIR-AP1210 platform and the AIR-AP1200 platform?

A. The only difference between the two Cisco Aironet 1200 Series platforms is the operating system. The new AIR-AP1210 platform features the Cisco IOS Software operating system. The AIR-AP1200 platform uses the VxWorks operating system. Both platforms feature the award-winning Cisco Wireless Security Suite and offer end-to-end intelligent networking features such as virtual LANs (VLANs), quality of service (QoS), and proxy mobile Internet Protocol (PMIP). Q. Can the AIR-AP1200 platform or AIR-AP1220 bundles be upgraded to support Cisco IOS Software?

A. At this time, customers will need to purchase the new AIR-AP1210 platform or AIR-AP1230 bundles in order to have Cisco IOS Software support. However, a software utility to allow the field upgradability of the AIR-AP1200 platform and AIR-AP1220 bundles to support Cisco IOS Software is planned for availability in the second quarter of the 2003 calendar year.

Q. Do the AIR-AP1210 platform and the AIR-AP1230 bundles cost the same as the AIR-AP1200 platform and AIR-AP1220 bundles?

A. Yes. The new AIR-AP1210 platform and AIR-AP1230 bundles are the same list price as the AIR-AP1200 platform and AIR-AP1220 bundles.

Q. Has an end-of-life plan been announced for the AIR-AP1200 platform and AIR-AP1220 bundles?

A. No. The AIR-AP1200 platform and AIR-AP1220 bundles will remain available and orderable to allow our customers time to migrate to the new AIR-AP1210 platform or AIR-AP1230 bundles.

Q. Which Cisco Aironet 1200 Series platform should customers purchase?

A. We suggest that customers installing new wireless installations with Cisco Aironet 1200 Series access points purchase the new AIR-AP1210 platform or AIR-AP1230 bundles in order to experience the current and future benefits of Cisco IOS Software support. Customers with existing wireless installations using the AIR-AP1200 platform will need to evaluate their wireless installations to determine which platform is best for their installation. Going forward, all new Cisco Aironet 1200 Series feature development will be Cisco IOS Software based.
