Cisco Aironet Windows Installation Wizard Software Release 1.3 for Cisco Aironet Wireless LAN Client Adapters

Cisco Systems® announces the availability of a new release of Cisco® Aironet® Software for Windows. The software provides support for Extensible Authentication Protocol-Flexible Authentication via Secure Tunneling (EAP-FAST), Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) migration mode, quiet mode, expanded user and domain names, and radio management support for Cisco Aironet 5 GHz 54 Mbps Series wireless LAN client adapters.

New Features

The following new features are included in Cisco Aironet Windows Installation Wizard Software Release 1.3. These features are supported by Cisco Aironet 350 Series and Cisco Aironet 5 GHz 54 Mbps Series wireless LAN client adapters.

EAP-FAST—EAP-FAST is a new IEEE 802.1X authentication type available for Cisco Aironet 350 Series and Cisco Aironet 5 GHz 54 Mbps Series client adapters on computers running Windows 2000 or Windows XP. EAP-FAST offers flexible, easy deployment and management, supports several user and password database types, supports server-initiated password expiration and change, and does not require digital certificates. Cisco developed EAP-FAST for customers who want to deploy an 802.1X EAP type that does not use certificates and that provides protection from dictionary attacks. For example, a customer using Cisco LEAP who cannot enforce a strong password policy and does not want to use certificates can migrate to EAP-FAST for protection from dictionary attacks. EAP-FAST allows for a smooth migration from Cisco LEAP, and is supported by the Cisco Wireless Security Suite. For more information about EAP-FAST, read the EAP-FAST Q&A.

WPA Migration Mode—WPA migration mode is an access point setting that enables both WPA and non-WPA clients to associate to an access point using the same Service Set Identifier (SSID). To use this feature, the access point must be configured for migration mode (WPA optional with Temporary Key Integrity Protocol [TKIP] + Wired Equivalent Privacy [WEP] 128 or TKIP+WEP40 cipher).

Radio Management Support—Radio management (RM) support has been added to Cisco Aironet 5 GHz 54 Mbps Series wireless LAN client adapters. Radio management allows a Cisco Aironet client device or access point to take radio measurements and to continuously scan and monitor the air/radio frequency environment. Radio management is a component of the Cisco Structured Wireless-Aware Network (SWAN). Cisco SWAN uses radio management data to provide:

Rogue access point detection and location

Interference detection to isolate and locate network interference

Assisted and automated site surveys for simplified wireless LAN deployment and management processes

Air/radio frequency (RF) scanning and monitoring

Streamlined wireless LAN management and operations support

Self-healing wireless LANs

Radio management support is also available for Cisco Aironet 350 Series wireless LAN client adapters using the Cisco Aironet Windows Installation Wizard Software Release 1.2 or later. Cisco Aironet Series access points must use Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.2(13)JA or later to enable radio management.

Quiet Mode—This new feature forces the client adapter to become quiet (to passively scan or listen) when its associated access point is turned off. In quiet mode, the client generates radio frequency energy only in direct response to an access point transmission. When the access point is turned back on, it starts sending beacons, which the client hears and responds to. Quiet mode applies to individual cards rather than to profiles. It can be set differently for different cards, and remains in effect across Cisco Aironet Client Utility sessions and computer reboots.

User and Domain Names—The maximum length of the combined user name and domain name for both Cisco LEAP and EAP-FAST authentication has been increased from 32 to 64 characters. Up to 64 characters for the user name can be specified (if a domain is not specified), or up to 63 characters for a user name and domain name combination can be specified.
