Frequently Asked Questions About Catalyst 3000

Is the port administratively disabled?

If the "LK/FDX" LED is off, the port can be disabled. In order to verify that the port is administratively disabled, complete these steps:

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Configuration, and the Configuration Menu displays.

  2. Choose Port Configuration, and the Port Configuration Screen displays.

  3. The "Enabled/Disabled" column shows the status of each port. (If the problem port is not on this screen, choose "More" to show more ports.)

If the status of the problem port is "Disabled," the port is administratively disabled.

What are the proper cables for this product?

  • 10BaseT port - straight through RJ-45 cable to a router or workstation, or rolled RJ-45 cable to a hub or another switch

  • 100BaseTX - straight through RJ-45 cable to a router or workstation, or rolled RJ-45 cable to a hub or another switch (Category 5 UTP)

  • 10BaseF port - multimode fiber with an ST connector

  • 100BaseF port - multimode fiber with a MIC connector (for connections up to 2 km long), or singlemode fiber with an ST connector (for connections longer than 2 km)

  • ATM - multimode or singlemode fiber with an SC connector

  • 100VG Twisted Pair Transceiver port - 4-pair UTP cable with an 8-pin RJ-45 connector (Category 3 or 4 UTP for connections up to 100 m long, Category 5 for connections up to 500 m long)

  • 100VG Fiber-Optic Multimode ST Transceiver port - multimode fiber with a MIC connector (for connections up to 2 km long), or singlemode fiber with an ST connector (for connections longer than 2 km)

How do I enable the port module?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Configuration, and the Configuration Menu displays.

  2. Choose Port Configuration, and the Port Configuration Screen displays.

  3. Choose the problem port, and press Return to toggle it to enabled status.

How do I determine if an IP address is configured on the switch?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Configuration, and the Configuration Menu displays.

  2. Choose IP Configuration, and the IP Configuration Panel displays.

  3. The current IP address for the domain displays.

How do I configure an IP address?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Configuration, and the Configuration Menu displays.

  2. Choose IP Configuration, and the IP Configuration Panel displays.

  3. You can configure the IP address, default gateway address, and IP subnet mask in this IP Configuration panel.

How do I check the subnet mask on the switch and reconfigure it?

In order to check the subnet mask on the switch, complete these steps:

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Configuration.

  2. Choose IP Configuration.

  3. If you are prompted to choose a VLAN, choose "default." The "Subnet Mask" field contains the current IP subnet mask.

  4. In order to configure the subnet mask on the switch, enter the correct subnet mask in the "Subnet Mask" field.

Is there a default route on the switch?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the console Main Menu, choose Configuration.

  2. At the Configuration Menu, choose IP Configuration.

  3. The default gateway is shown in the IP Configuration Panel.

How do I set a default route on the switch?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Configuration Menu, choose IP Configuration.

  2. Enter the default gateway address in the "Default Gateway" field of the IP Configuration panel.

What VLAN configuration documents exist on CCO?

Are the switch ports to which the end devices connect in the same VLAN? How do I assign both ports to the same VLAN?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Configuration Menu, choose VLAN and VTP Configuration.

  2. Press Return and the VLAN and VTP Configuration Menu is displayed. Choose Local VLAN Port Configuration.

  3. Press Return, and the Local VLAN Port Configuration Menu displays.

This menu shows each port to which the VLAN is assigned. Both ports must be assigned to the same VLAN. For more information, refer to the VTP and VLAN Configuration Screens section of Console Configuration.

Are the VLAN or trunk ports configured to pass that VLAN?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Configuration Menu, choose VLAN and VTP Configuration.

  2. Press Return and the VLAN and VTP Configuration Menu is displayed. Choose Local VLAN Port Configuration.

  3. Press Return, and the Local VLAN Port Configuration Menu displays.

This menu shows each port to which the VLAN is assigned. Both ports must be assigned to the same VLAN. On a Catalyst 3000-Series Switch, all VLANs are enabled on all trunk ports. For more information, refer to the VTP and VLAN Configuration Screens section of Console Configuration.

How do I assign all non-trunk ports along the link to the same VLAN, and configure any trunk ports along the link to pass that VLAN?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Configuration Menu, choose VLAN and VTP Configuration.

  2. Press Return and the VLAN and VTP Configuration Menu is displayed.

  3. Choose Local VLAN Port Configuration.

  4. Press Return, and the Local VLAN Port Configuration Menu displays.

  5. Choose Change at the bottom of the screen and press Return.

  6. At the prompt, enter the number of the port for change of the VLAN assignment.

On a Catalyst 3000-Series Switch, all VLANs are enabled on all trunk ports. For more information, refer to the VTP and VLAN Configuration Screens section of Console Configuration.

Are all the switch ports along the link between the end device and the router either in the same VLAN or trunk ports configured to pass that VLAN?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Configuration Menu, choose VLAN and VTP Configuration.

  2. Press Return and the VLAN and VTP Configuration Menu is displayed. Choose Local VLAN Port Configuration.

  3. Press Return, and the Local VLAN Port Configuration Menu displays.

This menu shows each port to which the VLAN is assigned. Both ports must be assigned to the same VLAN. On a Catalyst 3000-Series Switch, all VLANs are enabled on all trunk ports. For more information, refer to the VTP and VLAN Configuration Screens section of Console Configuration.

Is the trunk port connected and configured with the correct speed and duplex settings?

In order to determine if the trunk port is connected, complete these steps:

  1. From the Configuration Menu, choose Module Information.

  2. Press Return, and the Module Information screen displays.

  3. In the "Model" column, verify that "WS-X3009" or "WS-X3010" is displayed (these are the model numbers of the available dual-port ISL modules), and that the status of that module is "up."

In order to determine if the trunk port is configured with the correct speed and duplex settings, complete these steps:

  1. Return to the Configuration Menu, choose Port Configuration.

  2. Press Return, and the Port Configuration Menu displays.

  3. Check the output in the "Link," "Speed," and "Duplex" columns. The link must be "up," and the speed and duplex must match on both ends of the trunk.

How do I connect the trunk port and/or correct its speed and duplex configuration?

Complete these steps:

  1. Return to the Configuration Menu, choose Port Configuration.

  2. Press Return, and the Port Configuration Menu displays.

  3. Choose Change at the bottom of the screen. You cannot change the speed setting of the ISL ports.

Is the trunk port trunking and configured to pass the desired VLAN range?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Configuration Menu, choose VLAN and VTP Configuration.

  2. Press Return and the VLAN and VTP Configuration Menu is displayed.

  3. Choose Local VLAN Port Configuration.

  4. Press Return, and the Local VLAN Port Configuration Menu displays.

  5. Check the entry in the "VLAN" column for the trunk port. You see the VLAN range or VLAN numbers you want the trunk to carry.

  6. From the Port State Configuration Menu, choose Trunking.

  7. Press Return.

  8. On the ISL Trunking Configuration Menu, make sure that the state of the trunk port is "Trunk" and the trunking mode is "On."

Is the trunk port connected?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Configuration Menu, choose Module Information.

  2. Press Return, and the Module Information screen displays.

  3. In the "Model" column, verify that "WS-X3006" is displayed (this is the model number of the available ATM expansion module) and that the status of that module is "up."

  4. Return to the Configuration Menu, and choose Port Configuration.

  5. Press Return, and the Port Configuration Menu displays.

  6. Check the output in the "Link" column. The link must be "up."

Is the problem switch configured with the correct VTP domain name?

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Configuration.

  2. Press Return, and the Configuration Menu displays.

  3. Choose VLAN and VTP Configuration.

  4. Press Return, and the VLAN and VTP Configuration Menu displays.

  5. Choose VTP Administrative Configuration.

  6. Press Return, and the VTP Administrative Configuration Menu displays.

  7. Choose Domain Name.

  8. Press Return.

  9. At the prompt, enter the correct domain name.

Standardize the VTP version running on all switches in the VTP domain.

Catalyst 3000 series switches only support VTP version 1. Make sure that any other switches in the VTP domain also run VTP version 1.

Configure trunking and/or the desired VLAN range on the trunk port.

Complete these steps:

  1. From the Main Menu, choose Configuration.

  2. Press Return, and the Configuration Menu displays.

  3. Choose VLAN and VTP Configuration.

  4. Press Return, and the VLAN and VTP Configuration Menu displays.

  5. Choose Local VLAN Port Configuration.

  6. Press Return, and the Port State Configuration Menu displays.

  7. Choose Change.

  8. Press Return.

  9. At the prompt, enter the trunk port number.

  10. Press Return.

  11. Correct the VLAN settings.

  12. From the Port State Configuration Menu, choose Trunking.

  13. Press Return, and the ISL Trunking Configuration Menu displays.

  14. Choose Change.

  15. Press Return.

  16. Enter the trunk port number at the prompt.

  17. Press Return.

  18. Set the trunking mode to "On."
