Introduction

This document describes how to identify and configure the Internet Protocol (IP) address on a Cisco 6732 Multi-Service Access Platform. The Cisco 6732 is configured and monitored by the Element Management System (EMS). There is no capability to configure or manage the Cisco 6732 using a command line interface. The EMS requires the IP address of the 6732 to establish communications with the device. The IP address is stored on the EEPROM located on the 6732 backplane.

If the IP address of the 6732 is unknown because (1) the device is new and the default IP address is not 192.168.0.2 for the primary MCC or 192.168.0.3 for the secondary MCC, or (2) the record of the address was lost, this document provides a step-by-step procedure for identifying and configuring the IP address so that the EMS can be used for device configuration and management.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:

  • EMS version 1.3(2)

    Registered users who are logged in can access the software here.

  • Cisco 6732 Alarm Maintenance and Management (AMM) card and Main Control Card-Stratum 3 (MCC3) that runs version 1.3(2) software in a lab environment with cleared configurations

  • Laptop computer with Network Associates Sniffer Pro 3.5 software package to capture, store, and display IP packets in plain text

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

How To Identify and Configure the IP Address on a Cisco 6732

Tasks Performed

Complete these steps in order to identify and configure the IP address for a Cisco 6732:

  1. Use an RJ-45 crossover cable to directly connect a laptop to the Cisco 6732 AMM.

  2. Initiate IP packet collection using a laptop software package, such as Network Associates Sniffer Pro 3.5.

  3. Using the appropriate electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection, re-seat the AMM to generate IP packets.

  4. After several packets have been collected, stop IP packet collection using a laptop software package, such as Network Associates Sniffer Pro 3.5.

  5. View the decoded IP packets collected from the AMM.

  6. Change the network address of the laptop to be in the same subnet as the decoded IP address.

  7. Using the laptop, ping the IP address collected from the AMM.

  8. Start the Cisco 6732 EMS.

  9. Add the Cisco 6732 node with the decoded IP address collected from the AMM.

  10. Change the IP address and subnet mask to the desired value for the Active and Standby MCC.

  11. Exit the EMS.

  12. Change the network address of the laptop to be in the same subnet as the configured Cisco 6732 IP address.

  13. Using the laptop, ping the configured IP address.

  14. Start the EMS.

  15. Add the Cisco 6732 node with the correct IP address.

  16. Change the Gateway address to the desired value.

  17. Remove the crossover cable to the laptop.

  18. Use a straight-through cable to connect the Cisco 6732 AMM to the appropriate hub or router for remote access.

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Use an RJ-45 crossover cable to connect the laptop Ethernet interface to the AMM 10BaseT receptacle. The AMM 10BaseT receptacle is on the front of the card.

    The laptop (or other device) must have a software package to capture, store, and display IP packets in plain text. The software package must be tested to verify functionality. For this example, Sniffer Pro 3.5 was used.

  2. Initiate IP packet collection using a laptop software package such as Network Associates Sniffer Pro 3.5. This is typically a start capture option from the pulldown menu.

  3. Using the appropriate ESD protection, physically remove the AMM from the slot and wait 10 seconds, and return the AMM to the slot.

    This activity triggers IP packet generation and the Sniffer will be able collect packets quickly. Verify that the Sniffer is collecting packets using a monitoring feature such as a dashboard gauge.

  4. Stop IP packet collection using a laptop software package such as Network Associates Sniffer Pro 3.5.

  5. View the IP packets collected from the AMM in plain text. This is typically a decode option for display. The Cisco 6732 IP address will be displayed in dotted decimal format.

  6. Use the system settings to change the network address of the laptop to be in the same subnet as the Cisco 6732 IP address.

  7. Using the laptop system, ping the IP address collected from the AMM. For Windows 95 and Windows NT use the MSDOS feature. For Windows 2000 use the command prompt feature.

  8. Start the Cisco 6732 EMS by running netView.exe from the laptop.

  9. Create a New Node, and add it to the EMS using the decoded IP address.

  10. Double-click the node icon that you just created. The node should display all cards after being successfully added.

  11. Using the EMS, select the Node button from the display screen to change the IP address and subnet mask on the Active and Standby MCC to the desired value.

    Connectivity between the EMS (laptop) and the Cisco 6732 will be lost after the change is made.

  12. Exit the EMS.

  13. Use the system settings to change the network address of the laptop to be in the same subnet as the Cisco 6732 IP address.

  14. Using the laptop system, ping the IP address collected from the AMM. For Windows 95 and Windows NT use the MSDOS feature. For Windows 2000 use the command prompt feature.

  15. Start the Cisco 6732 EMS by running netView.exe from the laptop.

  16. Create a new node, and add it to the EMS using the configured IP address.

  17. Double-click the node icon that you just created.

    The node should display all cards after being successfully added.

  18. Using the EMS, select the Node button from the display screen.

  19. Click the IP & Datalink Route Configuration button. This step brings up the data-link route configuration window to change the Gateway address to the desired value. The EMS will be connected remotely via the gateway hub or router.

  20. Remove the crossover cable to the laptop.

  21. Use a straight through cable to connect the Cisco 6732 AMM to the appropriate hub or router for remote access.

Verify

If the IP address is correct and has been properly configured, the EMS will be able to display and configure the Cisco 6732.

Troubleshoot

If the IP address cannot be identified using the AMM, use the active MCC3. The AMM provides IP connectivity to both active and standby MCC3s without having separate cables to each 10BaseT receptacle. Complete these steps in order to identify the IP address using the MCC3:

  1. Move the RJ-45 cable from the receptacle on the AMM to the receptacle on the Active MCC3.

  2. Repeat steps 2 through 5 of the step-by-step procedure substituting the Active MCC3 for AMM.

  3. Reconnect the RJ-45 cable to the receptacle on the AMM.

  4. Complete the process starting with step 6 of the step-by-step procedure.
