New and Changed Information
The topics below contain new and updated information about Cisco VG248 features:
Upgrading the VG248 Image
This update adds necessary details to the "Upgrading the Main Image" and "Resolving an Incomplete Upgrade" procedures provided in Cisco VG248 Analog Phone Gateway Software Configuration Guide 1.3(1), "Troubleshooting the VG248." For general information about troubleshooting the VG248, see this section of the guide:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/vg248/1_3_1/english/configuration/guide/vg248swt.html
Use these procedures to upgrade the VG248 software image and resolve any issues resulting from an incomplete transfer.
CautionWhen you copy a new software image to the VG248 using the FTP facility, the current image is deleted automatically. If the FTP transfer terminates before the new file is copied to the VG248, the VG248 may not be able to start up. In this case, see Resolving an Incomplete Upgrade in these release notes.
Before You Begin Upgrading
Before you begin copying the new software image to the VG248, read these notes:
•
If appropriate, check the CCO software download site for a newer version of the image that may have resulted from a bug update or feature enhancement.
•
If you are using the VG248 to integrate with analog voice-mail systems, be sure to follow the instructions described in the "Suspending Voice Mail Port Activity" section within "Troubleshooting the VG248" in Cisco VG248 Analog Phone Gateway Software Configuration Guide 1.3(1):
VG248 Image Upgrade Procedure
Use this procedure to upgrade the VG248 main software image:
Procedure
Step 1
Obtain a configuration file with a name that uses this format:
vgc-main.version.tar,
where version indicates the release number, such as 1-0-1.
Step 2
Connect to the VG248 using the FTP facility.
CautionBe aware that in the next step when you begin copying the configuration file to the VG248 using the FTP facility, you must select "bin" mode. If you do not select bin mode, the downloaded image will be in an incorrect format. Later, when the VG248 restarts, it will unable to read the new image, and the system will go into a restart loop.
Step 3
Using the FTP facility and with bin mode selected, copy the configuration file to the VG248.
Step 4
For the new image to take effect, restart the VG248.
Step 5
To verify that the updated version was installed, choose Display from the VG248 main menu and then choose Version.
Resolving an Incomplete Upgrade
If the VG248 goes into a restart loop for any reason, such as a corrupt or incomplete image, one of the following circumstances results:
•
The boot loader loads, but the VG248 waits indefinitely at the Pausing for FTP prompt.
•
The VG248 loads the main image partially, pauses, and then restarts.
Because the gateway has gone into a restart loop in this situation, you cannot transfer the image using the FTP facility, <g/w ethernet ip address>, at this time.
Follow these steps to recover and download the image correctly.
Procedure
Step 1
You can access the network interface one of these ways:
a.
When the boot loader loads, it pauses for the FTP prompt. To get into the boat loader menu, choose ESC. Then press "configure network interface." After you are in the network interface, the Ethernet interface will stay up and you can copy the image to the gateway.
b.
Connect to the gateway console port through the terminal server or a hyperterminal. After authentication, the main menu appears. Click Configure and then Network interface. Now the VG248 Ethernet interface to the VG248 will stay up.
Step 2
Now you can copy the image to the gateway use the FTP facility without being concerned that the interface will go down.
Load Control
This feature was introduced in Cisco VG248 Analog Phone Gateway firmware release 1.3(2), but is not documented in the latest release of the Cisco VG248 Analog Phone Gateway Administration Guide.
Note
The Load Control feature requires the latest Cisco Unified CallManager 4.1(3) service pack or Cisco Unified CallManager 4.2(1) SR1, or later versions of 4.2. Cisco Unified CallManager 5.x does not support Load Control.
Enabling load control on the Cisco VG248 Analog Phone Gateway prevents it from crashing under less than optimal CPU conditions. Specifically, it limits the highest CPU percentage before call rejection begins and defines the lowest CPU percentage to resume call acceptance.
To access the Load Control parameters, choose Configure > Telephony > Advanced Settings and scroll to the bottom of the page. The following table describes the Load Control parameters and their description:
These are the recommended initial values for these parameters:
•
Load Control—CPU 5 Sec
•
Load Control (%CPU)—90
•
Load Control Hysteresis—10
The above settings can be adjusted to find an acceptable level.
Caveats
This section contains these topics:
