Problem Description

High Speed OC48 Cards (IR, LR, ELR) may exhibit bit errors when used in Slot 13 of the 15454-SA-ANSI chassis. This condition may occur when the active cross connect card is a 15454-XC in slot 8.

This condition only occurs in the new 15454-SA-ANSI chassis with specific circuit types (STS-48c, STS-12c, and certain STS-3c) and particular bit patterns.

This condition does not occur when a High Speed OC48 card (IR, LR, ELR) is installed in the other high speed slots (5, 6, or 12). This condition does not occur when using either of the OC48 'any slot' cards (15454-OC48IR1310A or 15454-OC48LR1550A) with the XC card when using 15454 Release 3.2 and higher. This conditions does not occur when using the XC-VT or XC10G.

Background

A new ANSI backplane was added as an integral part of the OC192 program. The shelf was optimized to support both 155 MHz signals and 311 MHz signals. 155 MHz signals are used for OC12 / STM-4 (622 Mbps) and lower line rates, 311 MHz signals are used for OC48 / STM-16 (2.5 Gbps) and OC192 / STM-64 (10 Gbps) line rates, when used in the service and trunk slots respectively. This 311 MHz mode was introduced to support 10 Gbps in the high speed slots and 2.5 Gbps to any service slot in the shelf.

The XC has slightly different trace lengths and impedance characteristics when interfacing the back plane than does the XCVT. The resulting optimization of the XC for the previous back plane has resulted in a marginal eye diagram between the XCs in slot 8 and the 155 MHz signal interface on the High Speed OC48 cards in slot 13 of the 15454-SA-ANSI chassis.

The XCVT has different clock delays that improve the margins. Cisco's testing has shown that the dribbling bit errors will not occur when using the XCVT or XC10G with the OC48 HS cards in the new chassis.

Problem Symptoms

This problem occurs only when the active XC is in slot 8 and the High Speed OC48 is in slot 13 of the new ANSI chassis. This problem does not exist with these cards in other slot configurations.

B3 path errors and bit errors can be monitored with test equipment. The errors reported on OC48 cards result in path level coding violations (CV-P), errored seconds (ES-P), and occasionally severely errored seconds (SES-P). The problem occurs primarily with a PRBS23 traffic pattern generated from a test set. This problem has only been observed on STS48c, STS12c and STS3c connections.

Note: The bit errors do not occur with previous versions of the shelf assembly (15454-SA-NEBS3E or 15454-SA-NEBS3), or when using an XC-VT or XC10G as the cross connect card.

Workaround/Solution

Cisco is implementing a resistor change to the High Speed OC48 cards that will assure compatibility with the 15454-XC card in all configurations.

In case of in-service High Speed OC48 cards deployed in 15454-SA-ANSI along with an XC card, a replacement card will be sent by Service to the customer. The old High Speed OC48 card is returned to Service.

To determine the Part Number, Hardware Revision and Serial Number of your OC48 boards:

  1. Open CTC.

  2. From the Shelf View, select Inventory .

  3. From the Inventory tab, locate the OC48 boards and compare the information from this tab against the products listed in the "Products Affected" section.
