Problem Description

Bit errors may be seen on an OC-12 card when the incoming line frequency is less than the internal clock of the Network Element (NE) by more than four parts per million (ppm). This can happen as a result of synchronization problems in the network, or if the node is operating in free running synchronous mode.

Background

This problem was discovered in the field and verified during subsequent lab evaluations.

Problem Symptoms

Bit errors may be seen when synchronization timing references drift off frequency by four or more ppm, or when networks are configured to free running synchronous mode.

Workaround/Solution

The problem has been corrected in the current release of OC-12 cards (Part # 800-06758-02, 800-06759-02, 800-06760-02) and all later versions.

OC-12 cards with the Cisco part numbers listed in the following table are susceptible to this condition.

If you have these cards deployed in your network and suspect increased bit errors as a result of the problem symptoms outlined above, please call the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) to request a Return Material Authorization (RMA). All revisions of our OC-12 cards later than the versions outlined above have incorporated design improvements to account for increased frequency offsets.
