FAQs

Is the Cisco OT Security Practitioner certification right for me?

The certification is for early-career learners, transitioning IT professionals, and vocational students in related fields (such as robotics and electrical systems) who want practical, applied skills for operational technology (OT) roles. Specifically:

  • OT technicians and industrial networking professionals
  • Entry-level OT/ICS security practitioners
  • IT professionals transitioning into OT security
  • Control systems and automation engineers
  • SOC analysts supporting hybrid IT/OT environments
  • Systems integrators and field engineers
  • Junior OT security consultants
  • Security+, CCNA, or CCNA Cybersecurity holders expanding into OT security

The certification aligns with IEC 62443, NIST guidance, the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF), and modern industrial security principles.

The certification validates core, cross-functional skills for securing any industrial environment. You can grow an existing OT career or pursue entry-level roles such as OT Cybersecurity Technician, Industrial Networking Technician, Automation Technician, or OT Security Operations Technician.

You'll gain hands-on skills to implement OT priorities like availability, safety, and network segmentation. These matter in environments where patching is often impossible and active scanning can crash equipment such as PLCs. You'll also learn how industrial networks, devices, automation, and cybersecurity work together.

Operational technology controls essential physical services like water, power, energy, and transportation. As plant floors connect to enterprise networks and cloud platforms, cyber threats to physical infrastructure are rising rapidly. Global standards (such as ISA/IEC 62443 and NIST CSF) now require validated OT security controls, accelerating hiring demand for cross-functional practitioners.

  • Cisco U.: The OT Security Practitioner (OTSEC) Learning Path launches November 5, 2026.
  • Cisco Networking Academy: Updated courses launch January 2027 (Industrial Networking Essentials, an Energy or Manufacturing specialization, and Industrial Cybersecurity Essentials).

Exam and certification details

The first date to test is February 3, 2027.

You can register online through Pearson VUE via the Cisco Certification Tracker or at authorized test centers.

Passing the exam validates your skills with the official Cisco OT Security Practitioner certification and a verifiable digital badge.

Learners can now validate their skills with a Cisco credential. Recommended preparation is Industrial Networking Essentials, one specialization (Energy or Manufacturing), and Industrial Cybersecurity Essentials, together about 75 hours of interactive content, labs, assessments, and Packet Tracer simulations. Courses remain free to Cisco Academies. A minor update to Industrial Cybersecurity Essentials will ensure it covers all exam topics.
