What Is AI-Enhanced Radio Resource Management?

Radio resource management (RRM) is a solution that improves wireless networks by automatically optimizing radio configurations such as changing channels, transmit power, and more to limit interference and maximize client capacity. However, there are still many manual processes that can introduce complexities and errors. There's a better way. Adding artificial intelligence (AI) to RRM offloads analysis of RF patterns to an AI engine that more intelligently optimizes RRM. The result is better connectivity for users and simplified management for network administrators.

How AI and RRM work together

RRM has evolved and can now take advantage of AI to analyze complex network data and deliver actionable insights for management simplicity. Using historical RF data, the solution discovers trends in the network and makes data-driven decisions that optimize the network before issues arise—all while continuously making improvements.

RRM is better with AI

Optimized connectivity (user experience)

AI algorithms boost wireless network performance by proactively learning your network's trends and patterns, and enhance how wireless endpoints operate over time. This allows the solution to more intelligently optimize your wireless network. This intelligent optimization results in impressive improvements such as up to 40 percent reduction in co-channel interference and 7-decibel gains in signal-to-noise ratio for wireless clients. Moreover, the system offers a "busy hour" feature that effectively reduces RRM changes during peak hours by up to 75%, allowing superior 24/7 connectivity.

Lower operational costs (administrative experience)

AI helps simplify RRM and provides a scalable deployment workflow, even for users who have minimal RF expertise. It provides RF visibility and actionable insights to further optimize RRM profiles, while increasing efficiency and eliminating error-prone manual processes.

Your investment, maximized

Whether used with Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 6, or previous generations of Wi-Fi at any scale, AI with RRM provides visibility and actionable insights into what was previously unknown.

Features of Cisco AI-Enhanced RRM

AI-Enhanced RRM Control Center

All Cisco AI-Enhanced RRM features can be accessed through the Control Center. This dashboard provides an instantaneous view of everything that you need to know about your RF performance in a single pane of glass to help ensure an always optimized Wi-Fi experience.

RRM widgets

  • RRM Performance: This widget determines the health of your network's RF according to key performance indicators (KPIs) such as co-channel interference, noise, signal-to-noise ratio, and radio utilization. This data is then used to calculate a network performance score, which you can consult to help keep your wireless network optimized.
  • RRM Changes: This widget shows the number and types of RRM changes that have been made, from the macro-building level all the way down to the individual access point (AP) level. This feature depicts the reason for changes and quantifies the improvement, giving visibility into exactly what’s happening within your network.
  • Co-Channel Interference: This widget shows the status of AP radios and which ones are experiencing co-channel interference. The widget then categorizes the radios by severity, helping you see which areas need your attention.

AI-driven, actionable insights

AI-Enhanced RRM uses the secure* Cisco AI Analytics Cloud engine to process sophisticated algorithms that analyze and optimize Cisco wireless networks. This capability draws upon data-driven events; if the AI algorithms find a more optimal RRM configuration, the solution recommends what to change, either now or at a scheduled time. Even if you deploy your wireless network using a default setting, AI-Enhanced RRM will recommend adjustments to the most optimal configuration.

*Cisco places the highest priority on protecting user privacy. To ensure that personal information is always safeguarded, all data transmitted to the AI Analytics Cloud is encrypted using the advanced AES-256 and SHA-256 standards, and the private key is securely stored on-premises with your Cisco Catalyst Center platform.

RRM Simulator

The RRM Simulator lets you preview the impact of RRM changes on the live network, enabling you to:

  • Simulate how the RF environment will respond to the changes
  • Analyze the impact of potential changes during a particular time interval
  • View the proposed changes measured in quantitative statistics, including RRM health, co-channel interference and utilization, and RRM changes
