Problem Description

Two separate, but related issues are addressed in this notice. The first, addressed through CSCsd33492, is described in items 1 and 2 below:

1. Pre-amplifiers and Booster amplifiers (15454-OPT-BST, 15454-OPT-PRE) raise an equipment failure alarm (EQPT) and a Communication Failure Condition (COMM-FAIL). The alarm disables APC in the network, preventing circuit creation.

2. A traffic hit is generated during MSTP NE Software Upgrade.

   The second issue, addressed through CSCsd92505, is as follows:

3. A Traffic hit from 100ms to 300ms might occur on OPT-PRE and OPT-BST cards (vendorID=1025) during a unit Software Reset or a Firmware upgrade.

Note: This hit occurs only under specific scenarios:

- OPT-BST GainCTRL might have hits for gain > 17 dB and Pin < -10 dBm

- OPT-PRE PwrCTRL Hits below -33dBm

Background

1. The alarm can be rarely generated under normal operating conditions by Pre-amplifiers and Booster amplifiers having a VendorID equal to 1025.

2. Traffic hit may be generated by an OPT-BST unit having a VendorID equal to 1025 when operating with a Gain higher than 17dB and Total Input Power lower than -10dBm.

Problem Symptoms

1. An affected unit may raise and clear a Communication Failure Alarm (COMM-FAIL) before the equipment failure alarm (EQPT) because of a communication problems between the unit and the Node Controller (TCC).

2. Optical Circuits passing through an affected Booster Amplifier unit may experience a traffic hit of a duration between 10 and 300mSec during an MSTP NE Software Upgrade.

Workaround/Solution

If the problem occurs, perform a non-traffic affecting reset using the CTC craft terminal on the affected amplifier to clear the alarm. This will re-enable APC and allow normal operation for the network.

If an Optical Booster Amplifier unit is working in the condition reported above, a workaround procedure can be followed to increase the Total Input Power and avoid Traffic Hits. This procedure can be applied only to nodes equipped with OADM (AD-1C-xx.x, AD-2C-xx.x, AD-4C-xx.x, AD-1B-xx.x, AD-4B-xx.x), ROADM (32-WSS and 32-DMX) and MUX/DMUX (32MUX-O and 32-DMX-O) units.

1. Locate the MSTP node where OPT-BST is used and check the Total Input Power by looking at the COM-RX Port.

2. If Total Input Power is lower than -10dBm then the following steps should be performed before upgrading the Software

   1. Disable APC in the node.

   2. Increase the Target Optical Power for the Added channels entering the OPT-BST with step of 1dB by changing the VOA calibration on the OADM, 32-WSS, 32MUX-O units

   3. Check on the far End Trunk Receiver DWDM Unit that no Optical Power Overload Alarm is raised.

   4. Repeat the two steps above for all the ADD Channels until the OPT-BST Total Input Power is greater than -10dBm.

   5. Perform NE Software Upgrade.

   6. Remove calibration once the upgrade is completed and Re-enable the APC.

If more than one unit is affected by this problem in the network it is suggested to adjust the Input Power for all of them before performing the Software Upgrade.

This issue has been addressed in two parts:

1. CSCsd33492 is related to card firmware improvements, significantly reduces the occurrence of the issue, and has been addressed in Releases:

   6.2 and later of the 6.xx family

   7.01 and later of the 7.0x family

   7.20 and later of the 7.2x family.

2. CSCsd92505 is related to the new Optical Module firmware image and the additional fix completes the reduction of occurrence and provides the final solution. It is fixed in Releases:

   7.01 and later of the 7.0x family

   7.22 and later of the 7.2x family

Please upgrade in accordance to the issue you are experiencing, and the revision of software you are currently running.

How To Identify Hardware Levels

To determine if the 15454-OPT-PRE, 15454E-OPT-PRE, 15454-OPT-BST and 15454E-OPT-BST are impacted by these issues:

1. Open CTC.

2. Right-click on the amplifier module.

3. Click on the Inventory tab.

4. Review the Info tab.

5. If the "Vendor ID" is 1025, the module may be impacted by the issues noted above.
