Problem Description
Under normal operating conditions, a field-effect transistor (FET) in the rectifier may fail due to design tolerance limitations. The failure will cause the rectifier to lose power, and could be traffic impacting if there is no back-up power source.
Background
A small percentage of rectifiers have failed in the field shortly after installation. The root cause was determined to be a design flaw where the voltage applied to a FET within the rectifier slightly exceeds the recommended limit for the component.
Due to normal manufacturing variation, a small percentage of rectifiers may fail under normal operating conditions.
Problem Symptoms
Rectifier fails and has no power to support the -48VDC.
Workaround/Solution
A design change has been made to replace the FET with one designed to accommodate the higher voltage margin. All new rectifiers shipped after November10, 2006 are not subject to this problem.
Cisco recommends replacement of the rectifier with a new unit.
Although an upgrade program had previously been provided to replace potentially affected but otherwise working product, the upgrade program is now over and Cisco will only replace product which has actually failed. The standard RMA process should be used to replace failed product.
