Q. How do I upgrade the firmware of the Linksys VoIP Router?

Note: Verify the model number and suffix of your Linksys VoIP router before you try to update the firmware to ensure that you get the correct file. If the suffix is -NA, proceed with the upgrade. If not, the firmware loaded to the router comes from the VoIP provider. If you load the Linksys firmware, it nullifies the voice settings of the router.

These are the possible suffixes:

  • -VD

  • -AT

  • -AD

  • -AL

  • -NA

The new firmware adds numerous functions to the router. In order to upgrade the firmware of your router, you need to perform two steps: download the firmware and upgrade the firmware of the router.

Download the Firmware

  1. Before you download the firmware, make sure that your computer has an active Internet connection. If your computer is plugged directly into the router and cannot get online, disconnect your router and plug your computer directly into your cable or DSL modem.
  2. New firmware versions are available in the Cisco Software Center ( registered customers only) . Cisco recommends that you perform all firmware upgrades on your local network, not remotely.

Note: You need a registered account to login. If you do not already have one, visit https://tools.cisco.com/RPF/register/register.do. We do not share your information, so it is completely confidential.

  3. Click the firmware image with file extension .zip, and click the Download button to download the file to your local drive.

Note: The image can vary depending on the model number of the Linksys product.

  4. If you use Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Internet Explorer, you can see a "Pop-up blocked" message in your browser Information Bar. Click the bar, choose Temporarily Allow Pop-ups, and then click Download again.
  5. Click Save in the File Download dialog box that appears. Look for the Save As dialog box, choose a location for the file like the Desktop, and click Save. When the download is complete, click Close if prompted.

Note: The name of the file can vary depending on the firmware file of your router.

  6. If the firmware file you have downloaded is in zip format, double-click the zip file and extract its contents to a single folder or to the Desktop.

Note: You need to use a utility to open and extract files from the ZIP file archive such as WinZipregTag. In order to download WinZipregTag, visit http://www.winzip.com. You can also use the built-in unzip features of Windows XP to unzip the contents from the archive.

Upgrade the Firmware of the Router

Contact your VoIP provider to help reload the latest firmware of the router since the firmware is proprietary to your VoIP provider.
