Server Virtualization: Accelerate Application Deployment

The Cisco Unified Computing System and VMware vSphere joint solution combines an industry-leading virtualization software platform with a high-performance, highly flexible, and cost-effective hardware platform.

This solution is optimized for server virtualization, combining multicore x86-architecture processors with virtualized I/O to provide access to network and storage resources over a low-latency, lossless 10-Gbps unified fabric.

Together, Cisco Unified Computing System and VMware vSphere software speed application deployment using flexible resource pools. Resource pools adapt to secure applications and improve availability with fewer points of management and lower cost --eliminating barriers to virtualizing mission-critical applications.

Simplify Resource Management

Integration of Cisco Unified Computing System and VMware vSphere software provides mouse-click simplicity. Role- and policy-based management fosters better communication between administrative domains while automating and streamlining application and infrastructure deployment.

Combined with VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), Cisco VN-Link balances workloads across a pool of resources with enhanced mobility and security, increasing utilization and return on investment (ROI) while maintaining desired service levels.

The Cisco VN-Link hardware-accelerated implementation allows you to manage security and quality of service (QoS) on a per-virtual-machine basis, increasing throughput by up to 30 percent for reduced costs.

A Combined Solution: Better Together

Cisco Unified Computing System and VMware VSphere combine to deliver virtualization at every level of both the hardware and software stack to radically simplify data center environments.

Cisco Unified Computing System

The Cisco Unified Computing System integrates a low-latency, lossless 10 Gigabit Ethernet unified network fabric with enterprise-class, x86-architecture servers. This system features an integrated, scalable, multi-chassis platform in which all resources participate in a unified management domain.

The system is inherently stateless, with Cisco service profiles dictating every aspect of server provisioning -- from I/O configurations to firmware revisions and settings -- to speed virtual infrastructure provisioning. Cisco UCS Manager, in conjunction with Cisco vCenter, streamlines virtual application deployment by coordinating the creation and management of virtual network devices and the virtual links that connect them.

The underpinnings of the solution include VMware vSphere vCompute services, VMware vStorage services, and VMware vNetwork services. This combination of services simplifies the data center infrastructure and helps enable the next generation of flexible, reliable IT services.

Application services can be deployed simply and uniformly for any application running in VMware virtual machines -- providing simple built-in controls over application service levels.
