Cloud-managed data center fabric success

“Experience is the best teacher” is an old saying. In adopting emerging Cisco solutions for their data centers and distributed network architecture, BestPath network engineers have learned to successfully leverage their firsthand experience with Cisco solutions into a successful IT solutions and managed services business. With over a quarter of the company’s engineers Cisco Certified Internetworking Experts (CCIEs), these solutions include Cisco Nexus Hyperfabric, Cisco Meraki cloud-managed switches, and Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI).

“Everyone wants to automate to get more insights and deliver stuff quicker,” says James Williamson, Co-founder and Managing Director of BestPath. “Being both a partner and a customer of Cisco allows us to have a 360-degree view of products and to give feedback on them. Our customers get the benefit of that experience.”

BestPath customers are mostly enterprise companies with complex networks that require reliable, high-performance, cost-effective connectivity solutions.

BestPath was a recent beta customer of Cisco Nexus Hyperfabric, which enables rapid deployment of applications and services using cloud-managed capabilities instead of on-premises controllers. Delivered as a highly cost-competitive cloud service in Cisco switches, Nexus Hyperfabric enables staff with light IT skills to manage, operate, and secure network fabrics from the cloud, greatly simplifying deployment and configuration.

IT solutions at the speed of business

BestPath has found that fabric deployment and management in the cloud—without being tied to a location or having to integrate with legacy product sets in data centers—is a new paradigm that will be highly attractive to customers.

“Our managed services partners can get up and running in 24 to 48 hours,” says Williamson. “For our IT solutions customers, they’ll be able to manage, maintain, and configure their networks from anywhere. With hybrid work being quite important these days, having an on-premises management solution probably doesn’t make the most sense. If we look at smaller enterprises in particular, more advanced products can bring a lot of skillset requirements and high levels of complexity. Hyperfabric lets them ease into a new adoption curve quickly and easily.”

Management tools in Nexus Hyperfabric integrate with other management solutions and offer BestPath customers streamlined operations, simplified configuration, and assertion-based monitoring and maintenance. IT admins can easily scale, segment, and oversee multiple network fabrics globally with zero-trust security features, greatly reducing complexity and deployment time. BestPath calls it “delivering IT solutions at the speed of business.”

The cloud-managed nature of the solution should prove to be an advantage, especially in Europe, as financial services companies must comply with the Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), which mandates that companies must ensure the separation of network management functions to enhance cybersecurity and digital resilience.

Embracing cloud-managed simplicity

BestPath consultants are hybrid workers, relying on Cisco Meraki cloud-managed switches that are easily deployed, managed, and secured centrally through the Meraki dashboard.

“We’re a software-as-a-service-first company,” says Williamson. “What products like Cisco Nexus Hyperfabric bring to the table is that you’re no longer required to have a controller on premises. You just need a route out to the internet and you can onboard and understand what’s going on in the network very quickly. It’s a different approach to data center space with much simpler management, a smaller footprint, and big sustainability benefits.”

Using Nexus Hyperfabric provides a consistent and efficient approach to how BestPath architects IT solutions and provides managed services to its customers. Within BestPath data centers, the company uses Cisco ACI on Cisco Nexus 9000 series switches to perform proof-of-concept trial deployments for customers, to test topologies and network architectures, and to provide landing zones for hosted and managed services. These and other Cisco solutions exemplify how easily they integrate with off-the-shelf products and can be used to develop custom tooling to provide increased visibility and automated provisioning for customers.

“This fundamental change in the industry—from limited automation, static and rigid infrastructure, and on-premises controllers to a scalable, flexible, automated, and integrated cloud-managed network fabric with APIs—was what drove us to set up BestPath in the first place,” says Williamson. It has also earned BestPath kudos as a Cisco partner leading the charge in bringing innovative networking advances to market.
