Moving beyond loans to break the cycle of poverty

More than 2.5 billion people globally lack access to financial services like loans, insurance, and savings accounts, making it difficult for them to start their own businesses, protect their crops, save for their children’s education, or invest in their family’s health.

Opportunity International helps people not only support themselves and their families, but also empowers them to contribute to their local economy and create new jobs for their neighbors.

In FY18, using Opportunity’s digital solutions, 11M clients were able to start and expand their businesses, create jobs, educate their children, access training and support services, and change their communities for the better.

The organization’s diverse suite of financial products currently includes loans, savings accounts, insurance products, business planning services, farmer support, educator support, and access to health education.

Opportunity International embeds each product and service in a robust supportive context, giving users localized social support and targeted training to help them make the absolute most of the money. Each budding entrepreneur gets the chance to learn about the basics of business, especially the strategies that promote sustained growth over time.

Focusing in particular on agriculture, education, and health, Opportunity International empowers clients to create remarkable social impact by facilitating change at the grassroots level.

Opportunity International works to create sustainable livelihoods for people living in poverty. Innovative technology solutions made possible by our partnership with Cisco help us reach more people while improving the efficacy and impact of our programs.

Empowering entrepreneurs, one family at a time

Like Opportunity International, Cisco believes that equitable access to opportunity is an important human right. And, we believe that technology can build fairness and create change on an unprecedented scale when deployed in a responsive, user-driven manner. Together, our goal is to reach 20 million people and create 3 million jobs by 2021.

Opportunity International and Cisco are designing and testing innovative digital solutions that will empower people to work their way out of poverty and create jobs in their communities. Cisco supports the deepening digitization of their products and services, wherein sophisticated analysis of user data continuously drives creative design and iteration of their products and services.

They measure what works for their clients, as well as what doesn’t—and then adjust accordingly. They are also able to determine how best to target specific client segments, like women, the elderly, and/or the ultra-poor.

95% of the organization’s loans go to women. While women in the developing world have less access to mobile phones, they are more likely to invest in their families if given the chance. Gaining digital access to financial products and services builds autonomy and independence, yielding both inspiration and opportunity for their children.

3 million jobs created

Together we have supported the creation of 3 million jobs globally, which is helping people work their way out of poverty—for good.
