Problem Description |
| This Field Notice describes two changes to the products listed above: A) A manufacturing process issue on some WS-SUP720-3BXL and WS-F6K-PFC3BXL may lead to a lower life expectancy of the product. Serial Number List A B) As a result of a feature enhancement that was made to these products, a new minimum level of software is required. Serial Number List B |

Background |
| A) A variation in the manufacturing process resulted in a damaged component on some of the WS-SUP720-3BXL and WS-F6K-PFC3BXL products. When the product is exposed to conditions of humidity or high temperature, the damaged component may result in a short and render the card inoperable. Cisco has isolated these affected boards to a range of serial numbers. See Serial Number List A for products affected by this issue. B) An enhancement was also made to add a feature designed to protect high priority traffic within the fabric during periods of congestion. As a result of this change, older software will not work with the latest hardware version of these boards. The minimum software required is 12.2(17d)SXB1. See Serial Number List B for products affected by this issue. |

Problem Symptom |
| A) Should a short occur, the board will power down or reset to rommon prompt and will not boot. In the worst case condition, a small amount of smoke may be seen. B) The minimum software version required is 12.2(17d)SXB1, otherwise the system may become unstable and take an exception. |

Workaround/Solution |
| If your product is within Serial Number List A, a replacement is required. Please confirm that the Supervisor is within the serial number range and hardware version that is specified above. If the product is within the serial number range but at a higher hardware version than specified above, it is not affected. If your product is within Serial Number List B and you desire the enhancement you may request a replacement. To address both Category A and B a mandatory software upgrade is required. All new hardware will require an upgraded Software image. The minimum software required is 12.2(17d)SXB1. All customers should upgrade to 12.2(17d)SXB1. Note: RMA depots will be purged with the updated version of SUP720-3BXL. This will cause issues for customers who do not upgrade to the minimum software requirement. Upgrade to the minimum software version 12.2(17d)SXB1. |
