Virtual LANs/VLAN Trunking Protocol (VLANs/VTP)

Introduction

Virtual LAN. Group of devices on one or more LANs that are configured (using management software) so that they can communicate as if they were attached to the same wire, when in fact they are located on a number of different LAN segments. Because VLANs are based on logical instead of physical connections, they are extremely flexible.
Dynamic ISL (DISL)

Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP)
Dynamic Trunking Protocol (DTP). If a port can become a trunk, it may also have the ability to trunk automatically, and in some cases even negotiate what type of trunking to use on the port. DTP provides this ability to negotiate the trunking method with the other device.

Generic VLAN Registration Protocol (GVRP)
GVRP is a GARP application that provides IEEE 802.1Q-compliant VLAN pruning and dynamic VLAN creation on 802.1Q trunk ports. With GVRP, the switch can exchange VLAN configuration information with other GVRP switches, prune unnecessary broadcast and unknown unicast traffic, and dynamically create and manage VLANs on switches connected through 802.1Q trunk ports.

Inter-Switch Link (ISL)
Inter-Switch Link. Cisco-proprietary protocol that maintains VLAN information as traffic flows between switches and routers.

VTP
VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) is a Layer 2 messaging protocol that manages the addition, deletion, and renaming of VLANs on a network-wide basis.

802.1Q
Set of IEEE standards for the definition of LAN protocols.
