Effective September 30, 2005, Cisco Catalyst 6500 customers using Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.2(18)SXE and beyond will no longer be required to purchase a license for InterDomain Routing. Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and Intermediate System-to-Intermediate System (IS-IS) Protocol will be made available as part of the standard Cisco IOS Software image packages shown in Figure 1.
DESCRIPTION
Until now, to deploy InterDomain Routing, Cisco® Catalyst® 6500 customers were required to buy a separate license called the InterDomain Routing Feature License (product code FR-IRC6).
Cisco IOS Software Reformation software packaging was initiated on the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series from Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXE onward. Cisco IOS Software Reformation simplifies software packaging by reducing the number of software options to five packages. As part of that simplification, BGP and IS-IS have been integrated with the packages shown in Figure 1, thereby eliminating the need for a separate InterDomain Routing license.

BENEFITS
Cisco Catalyst 6500 customers no longer have to buy an InterDomain routing license for enabling BGP or IS-IS (earlier priced at US$5000). Starting with Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXE, BGP and IS-IS are included as part of the feature sets shown in Figure 1.

Q&A
Q. Why is the InterDomain Routing license being removed now?
A. Starting from Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXE, the entire Cisco IOS Software packaging scheme has been simplified. As part of that simplification, BGP and IS-IS have been integrated into the Cisco IOS Software packages shown in Figure 1 and are no longer sold as a separate feature.
Q. I bought a BGP license for Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXE in July 2005. Do I get a refund?
A. No. Removal of the BGP license is valid from September 30, 2005, onward and applies only to Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXE images and beyond.
Q. Do I still need a BGP license for older releases such as Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXD?
A. Yes. The removal of the InterDomain Routing license applies only to Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXE and beyond. Customers using older software releases should consider moving to Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXE or more recent releases.
Q. If I buy a Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXE image that gives me free BGP, but later on I decide to use a Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(17d)SXB image, do I have to buy a BGP license?
A. Yes. The removal of the InterDomain Routing license applies to only Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(18)SXE and beyond. It does not apply to previous releases.
Q. I have bought a supervisor with an Advanced IP Services feature set, and now I am buying another supervisor. Can I reuse my existing software license on the new supervisor?
A. No. The license follows a supervisor. Irrespective of BGP, a new software license is needed for the new supervisor.
Q. I am buying an IP Services feature set that will include BGP. Will IS-IS also be included in that feature set?
A. No. IS-IS is not supported in the IP Services Cisco IOS Software feature set. IS-IS is available on the Enterprise Service, Advanced IP Service, and Advanced Enterprise Service Cisco IOS Software feature,sets, and so you will have to buy one of these feature sets to deploy IS-IS.
