APPN-to-SNASw Migration Solution

Introduction

Organizations transitioning away from their SNA-based networking technologies still have a need to preserve the SNA routing requirements as they move their corporate networks to IP infrastructures. SNA Switching Services (SNASw) provides SNA routing and an SNA transport solution in IP.

SNASw is Cisco's second-generation Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking (APPN) product and replaces the traditional APPN product, called Portable SNA (PSNA), which Cisco has been shipping since 1995. SNASw eliminates problems inherent with the traditional APPN technology such as extensive broadcast traffic, complex configurations, and poor serviceability, usability, and management. SNASw supports APPN Branch Extender, APPN Enterprise Extender, and Dependent Logical Unit Requester/Dependent Logical Unit Server (DLUR/DLUS) functionality, providing increased reliability, greater scalability, and reduced configuration effort.

PSNA has been replaced by SNASw and will no longer be supported in Cisco IOS Release 12.1 and later. It is time to start considering migration steps from the traditional APPN features to SNASw.
