Release Notes for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers, Release 6.1.3
Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers (ASR 9000 Series) deliver unprecedented scale, service flexibility, and high availability for service providers’ fixed and mobile networks, data centers, and transport networks. The routers are powered by Cisco IOS XR Software, an innovative, self-healing, distributed operating system designed for always-on operation while scaling system capacity into multiple terabits per second (Tbps).
Cisco IOS XR Software is a distributed operating system designed for continuous system operation combined with service flexibility and higher performance.
This release notes describe the features provided in the Cisco IOS XR Software Release 6.1.3 for the Cisco ASR 9000 Series router. See the Software Features Introduced in Cisco IOS XR Software Release 6.1.3 section in this document for information about new features provided on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series.
From Release 6.1.1 onwards, Cisco introduces support for the 64-bit Linux-based IOS XR operating system. Extensive feature parity is maintained between legacy 32-bit and new 64-bit environments.
IOS XR 64 bit on ASR 9000 is the next generation IOS XR running in virtualized environment with underlying 64 bit Linux kernel. Cisco IOS XR operating system delivers greater agility, automation and simplicity, while reducing the cost of operating the networks. Here are few key capabilities:
Flexible Packaging—Flexible packaging is an enhancement that modularizes and delivers the Cisco IOS XR operating system as RPM packages. The base software is becoming leaner that contains only required mandatory packages. Other optional packages are separated out and made available as individually installable RPM packages. Users have the flexibility to select and install the services they want by choosing relevant RPMs. Redhat Packet Manager (RPM) based delivery of packages enable easier and faster system updates.
Data Models—Data models are a programmatic and standards-based way of configuring and collecting operational data of a network device, replacing the process of manual configuration. Using Data models, Cisco IOS XR operating system supports the automating of configurations that belong to multiple routers across the network. Data models are written in a standard, industry-defined language, which can define a new configuration and state an existing configuration on a network. Cisco IOS XR supports the YANG data modeling language. YANG can be used with the Network Configuration Protocol (Netconf) or with gRPC (google-defined Remote Procedure Calls) to automate programmable network operations.
Application Hosting—Application hosting gives administrators a platform for leveraging their own tools and utilities. Cisco IOS XR supports third-party off-the-shelf applications built using Linux tool chains. Users can run custom applications cross-compiled with the software development kit that Cisco provides. Application hosting is offered in two variants: Native and Container. Cisco IOS XR uses a 64-bit Linux-based operating system that simplifies the integration of applications, configuration management tools, and industry-standard zero touch provisioning mechanisms to meet the DevOps style workflows for service providers.
Telemetry—Streaming telemetry lets users direct data to a configured receiver for analysis and troubleshooting purposes in order to maintain the health of the network. This is achieved by leveraging the capabilities of machine-to-machine communication. Tuning a network based on real-time data is crucial for seamless operation of the network. Instead of a pull model, using a push model to continuously stream data out of the network enhances the operational performance and reduces the troubleshooting time. Data can be pushed out at ntervals determined by the administrator, at a cadence as low as 10 seconds. Using sophisticated algorithms, a back-end server can then analyze data received from the Cisco IOS XR operating system. The data can be encoded in JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) or Google Protocol Buffers (GPB). This analysis enables back-end management systems to measure and even predict control-plane and data-plane trends.

Cisco IOS XR 64 bit
From Release 6.1.3 onwards, Cisco introduces support for the 64-bit IOS XR operating system. The Cisco IOS XR 64 bit software is packaged in feature sets or also called software images.
This table lists the feature set matrix (ISO and RPM files) and associated filenames available for the Cisco IOS XR 64 bit Release supported on the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router.
Memory Requirements
Caution
If you remove the media in which the software image or configuration is stored, the router may become unstable and fail.
The minimum memory requirements for Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router running Cisco IOS XR Software Release 6.1.3 consist of the following:
minimum 6 GB memory on the RSP-440, RSP880 ASR 9912 and ASR9922 RP
minimum 6 GB memory on the RSP4-S (only for ASR9910)
minimum 2 GB compact flash on route switch processors (RSPs)
minimum 4 GB memory on the line cards (LCs)
These minimum memory requirements are met with the base board design.

Layer 3 VPNs are only to be used after you have purchased a license. Cisco will enforce the RTU of L3VPNs in follow on releases. You should contact Cisco, or check the release notes for the follow on release before upgrading for directions on how to install the license as part of the upgrade - otherwise the L3VPN feature may be affected.
The activation of VRF capability still requires the use of the appropriate per line card license (A9K-IVRF-LIC / A9K-AIP-LIC-B / A9K-AIP-LIC-E). Please contact your sales representative for more details.

Fabric Configuration Command for HighBandWidth Mode to Achieve Line Rate on 12x100 Line Card
When a chassis is configured in the "HighBandWidth" fabric mode, and has 12x100 line card with all fabric planes running, the fabric interface ASIC (FIA) rate limiter restricts the bandwidth on the 12x100 line card.
The hw-module fia-intf-policer disable command disables the FIA interface policer on the A99 line card in the highbandwith mode without loss of any fabric plane.
Do not use this command when the chassis has a A9K line card variant to avoid a drop in high priority traffic when there is a traffic congestion.
Pseudowire over Bundle for Native IRB Multicast
Native multicast IRB and MVPN IRB are supported over Pseudo wire bundle interfaces.

MACsec Key Rotation with Fallback Pre-shared Key
MACsec fallback pre-shared Key (PSK) feature ensures that a PSK is always available to perform MACsec encryption and decryption. The fallback PSK along with the primary PSK ensures that the session remains active even if the primary PSK is mismatched or there is no active key for the primary PSK.

Enhancements to Flexible Packaging
Flexible packaging is an enhancement that modularizes and delivers the Cisco IOS XR operating system as RPM packages.
Flexible packaging supports a customized ISO that includes ISO, RPMs, SMUs and configurations. This customized ISO, called the Golden ISO (GISO) eases installation and eliminates multiple install operations when installing additional packages. Important Notes
Cisco IOS XR Release 5.3.0 and later does not support combination of Cisco ASR 9000 High Density 100GE Ethernet Line Card and Cisco ASR 9000 Ethernet Line Card in a single chassis.

ISM (Integrated Services Module) is not supported on the ASR 9000 series routers with any cards last supported release is Cisco IOS XR Release 5.3.3.
From Release 6.0, A9K-RSP-4G, A9K-RSP-8G and the ASR 9000 Ethernet Line Cards also known as the first generation ASR 9000 LCs are not supported. For a detailed listing, see End-of-Life and End-of-Sale Notices
From Release 6.0, the onePK toolkit is not supported.
Starting Cisco IOS XR Software Release 4.3.2, the Flow Aware Transport (FAT) Pseudo Wire default label value changed from 0x11 to 0x17 (as per directions of the IANA). When building FAT pseudo wires between XR releases post 4.3.2 and 4.3.1 and prior, a configuration is necessary to set the flow label value to the old value of 0x11 (which is 17 decimal in the configuration. Please refer to the configuration guide for FAT Pseudowire for the exact command sequence or find more information on the ASR9000 BLOG on the support forums.
Country-specific laws, regulations, and licenses—In certain countries, use of these products may be prohibited and subject to laws, regulations, or licenses, including requirements applicable to the use of the products under telecommunications and other laws and regulations; customers must comply with all such applicable laws in the countries in which they intend to use the products.
Card fan controller, and RSP removal—For all card removal and replacement (including fabric cards, line cards, fan controller, and RSP) follow the instructions provided by Cisco to avoid impact to traffic. See the Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Getting Started Guide for procedures.
Exceeding Cisco testing—If you intend to test beyond the combined maximum configuration tested and published by Cisco, contact your Cisco Technical Support representative to discuss how to engineer a large-scale configuration for your purpose.
Installing a Line Card—For a fully populated 40-port high density Line Card with cable optics, maintenance time required for card replacement is higher. For more information about Line Card installation and removal, refer to the Cisco ASR 9000 Aggregation Services Router Ethernet Line Card Installation Guide.
Serial Interfaces Out of Order in show ipv4 interface brief or show ipv6 interface briefcommand—The show ip interface brief command might display interfaces out of order if different types of serialization are used on the SPA cards.
The serial interfaces are displayed in the show ip interface brief command output in the order shown in the example below:

This may be confusing (the interfaces appear out of order) for the user who is accustomed to IOS.

pw-class class1 encapsulation mpls control-wordFor configured policer rates of less than 1 Mbps, the actual policer rate can be approximately 10 percent less than the configured rate. For example, for a configured policer rate of 500 kbps, the actual policer rate is 448 kbps due to a granularity round down in hardware.
In Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Software Release 4.0.0, the minimum configurable logging buffered size has been increased to 307200. Any configuration with a value less than 307200 fails to upgrade to Release 4.0.1.
dsu mode Command Default— For E3 interfaces on the 4-Port Clear Channel T3/E3 SPA that interoperate with E3 interfaces on a Cisco 10000 Series router, the default data service unit (DSU) mode is digital-link. To change the DSU mode to cisco, configure scrambling.
In Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Software Release 4.1.0, you use the cablelength short command to set a cable length of 655 feet or shorter for a DS1 link on a 4-Port Channelized T1/E1 SPA. The cablelength short command options are listed as follows:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:(config-t1)#cablelength short ? 133ft 0-133ft 266ft 134-266ft 399ft 267-399ft 533ft 400-533ft 655ft 534-655ftHowever, when using the cablelength short command on a 4-Port Channelized T1/E1 SPA in Cisco ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Router Software Release 4.1.0, only the 133ft option (for cable lengths from 0 to 133 feet) works. The other values that are greater than 133 feet (266, 399, 533, or 655) all cause the T1 controller to go down. The workaround is to restart the controller after you set the cable length to 266, 399, 533, or 655 feet. The cablelength long command works correctly

Upgrading Cisco IOS XR Software
Cisco IOS XR Software is installed and activated from modular packages, allowing specific features or software patches to be installed, upgraded, or downgraded without affecting unrelated processes. Software packages can be upgraded or downgraded on all supported card types, or on a single card (node).
Software packages are installed from package installation envelope (PIE) files that contain one or more software components.

Resolving Upgrade File Issues
NoteIn some very rare cases inconsistencies in the content of the internal configuration files can appear. In such situations, to avoid configuration loss during upgrade, the following steps can be optionally done before activating packages:
Clear the NVGEN cache:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router# run nvgen -F 1Create a dummy config commit:

In some cases other activity may preclude a reload. The following message may display:
RP/0/RSP0/CPU0:router# reload Preparing system for backup. This may take a few minutes ............System configuration backup in progress [Retry later]If you receive this message wait and then retry the command after some time.
