Problem Description
When the C8540 MSR is placed under heavy load, cells may be misordered when they are sent out of a WAI-OC12-1MM PAM placed in a C85MS-SCAM-2P SuperCAM, causing cell losses and CRC errors.
Background
Cell losses and CRC errors caused by cell misordering occur when a WAI-OC12-1MM PAM is connected to a C85MS-SCAM-2P SuperCam in a Catalyst 8540MSR system. The 1-Port OC12 PAM on any C85MS-SCAM-2P is causes cell corruption that inevitabily leads to packet corruption whenever segmentation and reassembly (SAR) is performed to put the cells back into frames.
Conditions under which the problem occurs:
-
This problem is seen on Catalyst 8540 SuperCAMs using the one port OC12 PAM only.
-
It only manifests at traffic rates above 99% maximum OC-12 (1.398 Mc/sec and above).
Problem Symptoms
Visible symptoms include unexplained cell losses (no rx fifo drops shown in the switch) and CRC errors in frames transiting the hardware. The CRC errors are caused by the misordered cells leaving the WAI-OC12-1MM port adapter module.
Workaround/Solution
For a complete fix, there are two updates required.
-
The C85MS-SCAM-2P SuperCAM FPGA image must be updated to release 1.9 (fi-c8540-scam.B.1-9) or later. Download the file fi-c8540-scam.B.1-9 from the Cisco.com Software Center.
-
For the SCAM/OC12 combination with the C85MS-SCAM-2P installed in slots 10, 11, or 12, the Cisco IOS® software must be upgraded to release 12.0(18)W05(22), 12.1(7a)EY1, or later. If the combination is in slots 10, 11, or 12, then Cisco IOS software must be upgraded to release 12.0(25)$5(26), 12.1(12c)EY, 12.1(13)E1, or later. A simplified matrix is given below. Download the software from the Cisco.com Software Center.
