Note: All references to packet memory in this Field Notice and the accompanying upgrade forms refer to the total amount of packet memory on the line card. For example, a line card that has 32 MB of receive packet memory, 32 MB of transmit packet memory, and 2 MB SIMMS would be referred to as 64 MB of packet memory in this Field Notice.

Problem Description
If the affected Cisco 12000 series line card (listed in the Products Affected section) has 64 MB of packet buffer memory, the line card may experience console error messages. Packet corruption and dropped packets may also occur.
Background
A memory timing problem with 64 MB packet buffer memory is causing this problem.
Problem Symptoms
Following is an example of the type of console error message that may be generated:
SLOT 7:%LC-3-BMAERRSS: ToFab BMA SDRAM data error 1B00 in address 0
Workaround/Solution
All cards shipped with 64 MB of packet buffer memory may exhibit this problem. This problem has not been seen on cards with 256 MB of packet buffer memory. If you have an affected card (listed in the Products Affected section) with 64 MB of packet memory, there are two options for correcting this problem:
Option 1 - Upgrade the Memory
If you wish to replace your 64 MB packet buffer memory with 256 MB memory modules, order 256 MB memory modules at no cost by completing this form.
Option 2 - Return Your Cards to Cisco for Upgrading
If you wish to return your cards to Cisco to be upgraded from 64 MB to 256 MB of packet buffer memory at no cost, complete this form.

How To Identify Hardware Levels
Use the show diag slot command to view specific hardware information for a Cisco 12000 series line card installed in your system.
Following is an example of the show diag slot command for a OC-48c/STM-16c Packet-Over-SONET (POS) line card installed in slot 1:
