Implementation Options

Select one of these PPPoE implementations for your Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service.

  • PPPoE Option 1 The Cisco DSL Router is the PPPoE client. (Recommended) A PPPoE client feature was introduced into Cisco IOSĀ® Software Release 12.1(3)XG. This feature allows the PPPoE client functionality to be moved to the Cisco DSL Router, which means you do not need to load PPPoE client software on each PC on your LAN. This feature also allows multiple PC clients to be connected to the Ethernet interface of the Cisco DSL Router and share the single PPPoE session between the Cisco DSL Router and the ISP gateway router.

This implementation includes configuration examples for Network Address Translation (NAT) overload, NAT Pool, Static NAT, and Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) Server.

Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(3)XG or later is required on the Cisco DSL Router to support the PPPoE client feature.

  • PPPoE Option 2 The PC is the PPPoE client. This option requires PPPoE client software such as the Windows PPP over Ethernet (WINPoET) application to be installed on each PC on a local LAN.
