The 16-port OC-3c/STM-1 Single-Mode Long-Reach ATM module is a high-density module for the Catalyst® 8540 Multiservice Switch Router. It provides double the density of OC-3c ports per slot, compared to the Catalyst 8510 four-port OC-3c module. The Catalyst 8540 supports a maximum of 128 OC-3c ports. The 16-port OC-3c/STM-1 Single-Mode Long Reach module is identical to the 16-port OC-3c Multimode ATM module, except for the single-mode long-reach optical interface. Single-mode long-reach optics allow much greater distance between nodes than multimode optics (Figure 1).

Functions and Benefits

The 16-port OC-3c/STM-1 Single-Mode Long-Reach ATM module provides a high-density OC-3 Long-Reach option for the Catalyst 8540 MSR. A single Catalyst 8540 MSR switch can support a maximum of 128 OC-3c ports. The single-mode long-reach module allows typical maximum distances of up to 40 kilometers between nodes. It can be used for high-density point of presence (POP) installations; intercampus applications such as backbone trunking, server farm aggregation and data mirroring; and WAN connectivity (Figure 2). The long reach enhances business resiliency by enabling connectivity between sites in dispersed locations.

Indicators

Each port has three bicolor (green and red) LEDs. The three LEDs are positioned from top to bottom of the slot as Tx, Rx, and Link. Tx represents Tx traffic from the card to an external fiber; Rx represents Rx traffic arriving to the card from an external fiber; Link represents a proper signal-detect power level arriving from the Rx fiber.
