The Cisco Catalyst 6513 is a 13-slot chassis in the Catalyst 6500 Series.

The WS-C6513 ships with a 2500W power supply as a minimum orderable configuration.

Requires Catalyst 6000 Supervisor Flash Code 6.2(2) or higher.

Crossbar Fabric Module for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 chassis WS-X6500-SFM2

This Crossbar is a 256 Gbps Crossbar Switch Fabric for all Catalyst 6500 Systems.

Requires Supervisor Engine 2/Policy Feature Card 2 (PFC2) (WS-X6K-S2-PFC2).

Requires Catalyst 6000 Supervisor Flash Code 6.2(2) or later.

4000 Watt AC Power Supply

Requires Catalyst 6000 Supervisor Flash Code 6.2(2) or later. Also compatible with Catalyst 6000 Supervisor Flash Code 6.1(3).


Note To provide 256 Gbps backplane capacity, the Cisco Catalyst 6513 requires the new switch fabric module WS-X6500-SFM2. The Switch Fabric Module 2(WS-X6500-SFM2) is also backward compatible with the 6- and 9-slot Catalyst 6500 chassis. The 4000 Watt AC power supply is compatible with all existing Cisco Catalyst 6500 chassis.

Other Hardware Supported

The system supports all cards already previously supported by the Cisco Catalyst Operating System on the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engines.

Bidirectional VACLs for Private VLAN Communities

This feature enables customers to create policy that denies access in or out of a network, specifically a server farm. This feature also requires Cisco IOS Software Release 12.1(5)E on the MSFC.

Minimum Threshold for WRED

In current software versions the WRED minimum threshold defaults to zero and is not user-configurable. This feature provides a new command to configure a WRED minimum value on any port type.

MSFC Autostate Disable

This feature enables the user to turn off the MSFC autostate feature on the Catalyst 6500 Series so that the router VLAN interfaces are not brought down automatically when there are no other ports in that VLAN on the switch.

Multicast Suppression for Gigabit Ethernet Modules

This feature provides the ability to suppress multicast traffic at the port level. Currently only the suppression of broadcast packets is supported using the set port broadcast feature.

Non-RPF MFD (Multicast Fast Drop) - (Sup2 support only)

Currently in a redundant network topology (external and internal), multicast routers (MSFCs) can become overwhelmed with multicast non-RPF traffic, causing network instabilities. The non RPF MFD feature offloads the router from the non-RPF multicast traffic by dropping the traffic in the hardware. This is supported only for Supervisor Engine2. Cisco IOS software Release 12.1(6)E and later is also required to enable rate limiting.

Quality of Service (QoS) Data Export

This feature is an enhancement that provides additional counter statistics that can be exported to a file and used to analyze switch load and perform billing. With this feature, statistics are available for port and QoS aggregate policer counters. Port counter statistics are available through the CLI and are computed over an interval using an approximation algorithm. These port statistics can be used to determine the amount of recent traffic on a port.

VACL logging of access denied

This feature supports the ability to configure on any VACL a "log" option such that any packets or flows that are denied access by the VACL are redirected to the Supervisor Engine CPU to generate a report.

Per Port Utilization

This provides input/output packet rate and input/output byte rate on a per-port basis.

Kernel Dump

This is a debugging utility that allows the switch to core-dump its entire DRAM to PCMCIA Flash for debugging during exception.

BPDU Packet Filtering

This feature enables users to block portfast-enabled nontrunk ports from transmitting BPDUs. Spanning Tree protocol does not run on these ports.

BPDU Skew Detection

This feature detects whether BPDUs are processed at regular time intervals. Skewing is detected every time a BPDU for a VLAN is skewed for more than (hello time + 1 sec) and a syslog message is displayed when a BPDU is skewed for more than 50% of max_age time. This message can be used to ensure that a link is not overloaded and thus avoids causing potential spanning tree loops in the network.

This feature adds Media Independent Table support to provide information for full- and/or half- duplex and high-capacity links.

IEEE 802.1x

IEEE 802.1x is a standard-based solution to apply security and access control on devices connected to the switch. This access control protocol is a port-based solution to authenticate devices that are connected to the switch ports. Switches that are configured to authenticate their ports try to authenticate their peers when a link is established.

Local Command Accounting

This feature adds a debugging utility to record the last 100 commands performed within the system. Contents are retrievable using a show command and remain over a power cycle.

VLAN Management Policy Server (VMPS)/Dynamic VLAN support for Voice VLAN ID (VVID)

Dynamic VLAN enables users to retain the same VLAN even when moving to another port in the network. Multi VLAN Access Ports (MVAPs) belong to two VLANs: VVID and port VLAN ID (PVID). This allows the user to separate voice traffic (VVID) and data traffic (PVID) to different VLANs. Currently the dynamic ports can belong to only one VLAN at a time. All the hosts on a dynamic port must be in the same VLAN. Requests for users to be in a different VLAN are rejected.

With this enhancement, users can configure a VVID on a dynamic port to carry voice traffic. The VLAN for the data traffic is dynamically assigned based on the user.

The following table lists the software versions and applicable ordering information for the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series and Catalyst 5000 Family Supervisor Engine software.

Caution: Always back up the switch configuration file before upgrading or downgrading the switch software to avoid losing all or part of the configuration stored in NVRAM. When downgrading switch software, you will lose your configuration. Use the write network command or the copy config tftp command to back up your configuration to a Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server. Use the copy config flash command to back up the configuration to a Flash device.
