Migration from Catalyst 5000 Starter Kits to the Catalyst 6000 Family
If a customer has standardized in the past on the Catalyst 5000 Family products, the customer can continue deploying the Catalyst 5000 Family products. However, Cisco continues to also invest heavily in Catalyst 6000 Family development as the next-generation wiring closet solution for redundant supervisor configurations.
Benefits of a Catalyst 5000 to Catalyst 6000 migration include:
- Improved performance (from 1.2G or 3.6G to 32-Gbps fabric)
- Advanced switching technology offering increased deployment longevity (scalable to 256 Gbps)
- Host of industry-leading intelligent network services

Migration from Catalyst 5000 Starter Kits to the Catalyst 4000 Series
If a customer has standardized in the past on the Catalyst 5000 Family products, the customer can continue deploying the Catalyst 5000 Family products. However, Cisco continues to also invest heavily in Catalyst 4000 Family development as the next-generation wiring closet solution for nonredundant supervisor configurations. The Catalyst 4000 continues to support an up-sell strategy to modular chassis switching solutions in the wiring closet.
Benefits of a Catalyst 5000 to Catalyst 4000 migration include:
- Improved performance (from 1.2G or 3.6G to 24-Gbps or 60-Gbps fabric)
- Port densities up to 240 Fast Ethernet ports
- System-wide multiprotocol routing
- Consistent Catalyst end-to-end solution with Catalyst 6500 core backbones
