Cisco WAN Manager
Cisco® WAN Manager is a high-performance carrier-class element and network management product for the Cisco MGX®, Cisco BPX®, and Cisco IGX series multiservice switches and the Cisco MGX 8880 Media Gateway products. Deployed worldwide in some of the largest service provider networks, the Cisco WAN Manager can operate as a standalone network management system or can be integrated as an element manager using its northbound interfaces for highly efficient flow-through operations.
The complexity of today's multiservice and packet voice networks requires robust, scalable, and easy-to-use management tools. Cisco WAN Manager addresses this need by providing extensive, reliable, and scalable element management capabilities to rapidly deploy and manage services (refer to Figure 1).
Cisco WAN Manager Release 15 further enhances operator workflow and usability to make configuration, fault monitoring, and troubleshooting operations simple and easy to use. This translates to rapid service deployment, network health monitoring, and real-time fault detection and isolation.

Key Features and Benefits
•Scalability—The distributed architecture of Cisco WAN Manager provides the ability to provision and manage a large number of network elements supporting millions of connections with high-performance network synchronization rates. More than 100 GUI clients can be supported with redundant Cisco WAN Manager servers, allowing service providers to cost-effectively manage their growing networks.
•High availability and reliability—Multiple Cisco WAN Manager servers can be used for disaster recovery and to take turns for any maintenance and upgrade activities. Cisco WAN Manager synchronizes with the network status changes to maintain an accurate view of the network inventory and connections.
•Open northbound interfaces—Cisco WAN Manager provides a range of northbound interfaces, including Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Transaction Language One (TL-1), and APIs for flow-through provisioning and network monitoring, allowing easy integration with existing operations support systems (OSSs).
•Workflow-optimized GUI—The Cisco WAN Manager Release 15 GUI introduces an enhanced GUI designed to optimize daily operations for equipment and connection provisioning to accelerate time to revenue. The workflow-optimized GUI provides several powerful advantages:
–Consolidates network monitoring tasks into a single GUI to provide alarm browsing and filtering capabilities
–Offers ability to invoke equipment diagnostics and connection tests from the configuration or network monitoring GUI using menu shortcuts
–Maintains data context and provides drag-and-drop and template-based operations, minimizing operator time for data entry and object selection.
The enhanced GUI design consists of the Network Monitor, Configuration Center, Diagnostics Center, Chassis View, Statistics Reporting Tools, and Object Finder.
–Network Monitor—Details of network alarm and configuration status can be retrieved by a single click in the network monitor GUI. Alarm filtering can be enabled with a single click to view a specific class of alarms such as node, card, port, Cisco WAN Manager, critical, major, or minor.
–Configuration Center—The Cisco WAN Manager Configuration Center builds on the powerful connection management application and the equipment provisioning functions of earlier Cisco WAN Manager releases, by providing intuitive drag-and-drop and template capabilities. The configuration center provides capabilities to provision end-to-end ATM, Frame Relay, Frame Relay-to-ATM interworking, circuit emulation, voice, and low-speed data connections.
–Diagnostics Center—The Cisco WAN Manager Diagnostics Center provides access to all diagnostic functions based on the context of the selected managed entity. The diagnostics center provides access to all the available real-time statistics and test tools in one place, easing the task of diagnostics and troubleshooting.
–Chassis View—The Cisco WAN Manager Chassis View allows status monitoring of the equipment to be performed within seconds. Chassis view has up-to-date graphical displays of the front and back panels of the individual node. The alarm LED status for the service modules and physical ports are updated automatically to reflect the current node alarm status.
–Statistics Reporting Tool—All historical statistics collected by the Cisco WAN Manager Statistics Collection Manager in the database can be retrieved into a report format for trend analysis. Using this tool, the operator can systematically select a report type such as port level, line level, or connection level, and time period for the report to span. The result can be exported into a file for further use in other applications.
–Object Finder—The Cisco WAN Manager Object Finder provides extensive searching, sorting, and filtering capability to query the managed entities and alarm history in the embedded database.
•Performance and accounting management—The Cisco WAN Manager Statistics Collection Manager (SCM) collects network statistics that are useful for applications such as performance reporting, capacity planning, and billing. For large-scale networks, the statistics collection tasks can be distributed and offloaded to multiple Standalone Statistics Collector (SSC) servers and remotely controlled by the SCM. To enhance reliability for statistics collection, each Standalone Statistics Collector can act as a backup for another standalone SSC server.
•System administration—Cisco WAN Manager supports software upgrades by loading new software from a Cisco WAN Manager workstation. Background loading of new software allows simultaneous upgrades to multiple devices. Configuration save-and-restore features save a snapshot of the entire network configuration. For network disaster recovery, operators can selectively restore configurations for a single node or the entire network.
•Security management—Cisco WAN Manager provides GUI-based security, where user login IDs are mapped to UNIX security access profiles. These profiles are created in Cisco WAN Manager and contain read, create, delete, and modify privileges for each of the functional areas such as topology, connection manager, and performance reporting. Cisco WAN Manager logs read and write operations of all GUI users in a security log file and provides a powerful administrative GUI for viewing and filtering the audit log records.
•AutoRoute to Private Network-Network Interface (PNNI) network migration—Cisco WAN Manager Connection Management can provision and manage ATM and Frame Relay connections across Cisco BPX 8600 Series AutoRoute networks and Cisco MGX 8000 Series PNNI networks. This capability enables service providers to use their existing networks with Cisco BPX 8600 Series switches together with PNNI-controlled Cisco MGX 8850 PXM-45 systems for service expansion. Furthermore, Cisco WAN Manager can provision connections with Cisco IGX endpoints when the IGX switch is used as a feeder to a Cisco MGX PXM-45 or Cisco MGX PXM-1E node. This allows network operators to add PNNI-based Cisco MGX switches to the IGX network for network expansion.
Cisco Network Modeling Tool
Cisco WAN Manager works with the Cisco Network Modeling Tool (NMT) to provide network design and modeling capabilities for multiservice IP and ATM networks. With the Cisco NMT software, optimized network topology can be designed based on network configuration data retrieved from the Cisco WAN Manager. The Cisco NMT allows for "what-if" scenario planning based on predefined parameters to analyze user traffic patterns, optimize for least cost, and determine required network availability to meet service-level agreements (SLAs). The exporter feature provides an interface to third-party design tools such as WANDL and spreadsheets such as Microsoft Excel.
Cisco Information Center
Cisco WAN Manager provides fault information to the Cisco Information Center—a real-time, high-performance service-level monitoring and diagnostic tool that simplifies fault management by providing an end-to-end view of multitechnology and multivendor networks. Cisco Info Center offers a combination of filtering, alarm reduction rules, flexible alarm viewing, and partitioning.
Cisco Provisioning Center
The Cisco Provisioning Center is an integrated, automated provisioning solution for network service providers. It takes advantage of the capabilities of the Cisco WAN Manager to provision Layer 2 and Layer 3 services across Cisco end-to-end networking technologies. By automating the process, Cisco Provisioning Center reduces the complexity and expense associated with today's manually configured services.
