Introduction

This document describes the procedure to recover a lost console password on the Cisco SN 542x. The console password is used to enable users to check passwords on the storage router console interface.

Note: This password recovery procedure applies to the Cisco SN 542x running version 2.1.1 and later.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Follow these instructions to recover a lost console password:

1. Establish a console session to the SN 542x by performing these steps:

   

   1. Connect one of the supplied RJ-45-to-DB-9 adapters to the PC serial (COM) port.

   2. Connect the other side of the supplied RJ-45-to-DB-9 adapter to the RS-232 management port (labeled CONSOLE) on the SN 542x storage router.

   3. Launch HyperTerminal on the PC, and configure these settings:

      

      The terminal-emulation software, frequently a PC application such as HyperTerminal or Procomm Plus, makes communication between the storage router and your PC possible during setup and configuration.

2. Use the power switch to turn off the SN 542x, and then turn it back on.

3. Press the ESC key on your keyboard at the Press 'ESCAPE' key to stop auto-boot ... prompt to stop the reboot.

   Note: If you press the ESC key a few times during the boot process, the command stack sequence can interrupt the escape sequence prompt and bypass it, and you are not given a chance to break the process.

   

4. Type c to change the Boot parameters.

5. Hit Enter repeatedly until you get to the flags (f) field. If you go too far, go to the end and type c to start again.

   

6. Change the flags (f) field to 0X20.

   

7. Type p to review Boot parameter settings if desired. Type @ to continue the reboot.

   

   Note: The change to the flag (f) value is a one-time override. There is no need to change it back once the password recovery is achieved.

8. Now that you have established a connection, you may choose one of these options:

   1. Change the administrator and monitor passwords to access the console interface of the storage router:

      [SN542x]# admin password <password>
      
      !--- Sets the administrator password (for system administrators, allowing configuration changes).
       
      
      [SN542x]# monitor password <password>
      
      !--- Sets the monitor password (for users who only monitor storage router operation).
      
      

   2. Remove password protection from the console port and save the changes to memory:

      [SN542x]# no restrict console
      
      !--- Disables password checking on the console interface.
      
      
      [SN542x]# save all bootconfig
      
      !--- Saves the current running configuration information
      !--- to the storage router's bootable configuration, which is 
      !--- used when the SN 542x storage router is restarted.
      
      

      Note: The next time that you try to connect to the console port of the SN 542x, you will be required to enter either the new admin or monitor password you created.
