This product bulletin describes the content and delivery information for Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.3(8)YD and should be used in conjunction with the Cisco IOS Software Release 12.3T product bulletin. Cisco IOS Software Release 12.3(8)YD is a short-lived early deployment release that will be supported in the first release of Cisco IOS Software Release 12.4T. It supports the Cisco® 3200 Series Wireless and Mobile Router.
The platform and features delivered with this early deployment release will be incorporated immediately into the first release of Cisco IOS Software Release 12.4T. The timeframe for the availability of the first release of the Cisco IOS Software Release 12.4T train is the second calendar quarter of 2005, and is subject to change.
Future early deployment releases will be provided for maintenance support until Cisco IOS Software Release 12.3(8)YD becomes available in the first release of Cisco IOS Software Release 12.4T.
In addition to the supported features described in this product bulletin, additional information is available in the release notes for Cisco IOS Software Release 12.3(8)YD.
Customers should be prepared to upgrade using the migration path described in Figure 1.

Table 1 lists Cisco IOS Software Release 12.3(8)YD features that are new to the respective platforms.
Table 1. New Features in Cisco IOS Software Release 12.3(8)YD
Foreign Agent (FA) Local Route Optimization
Routes mobile IP traffic through foreign agent rather than through home agent (HA).
Clears information stored in volatile and nonvolatile memory on a router
Foreign Agent Local Route Optimization
In mobile IP networks, endpoint devices sending traffic through a single foreign agent must traverse through a home agent router. Often the home agent is in a different geographic region. Sending the traffic through a home agent may cause latency and unnecessary traffic across a mobile IP network.
The advantage of foreign agent local route optimization is that the Internet traffic between end devices attached to a foreign agent now can communicate with each other directly using the foreign agent router. Because the foreign agent router is further out in the network, fewer network delays are experienced and traffic is optimized across the mobile IP network.
Zeroization is a feature designed to clear the router of information when the security of a router is jeopardized. The zeroization function clears the router of information such as IP addresses, configuration in memory (NVRAM, Flash memory), and shuts down interfaces. After the zeroization is activated, the router can be redeployed by downloading a new image.
Table 2 lists the 3200 Series Image File Names that support FA Local Route Optimization and Zeroization features.
