Cisco MDS 9000 Storage Services Enabler Package Fact Sheet

Package Description

The Cisco® MDS 9000 Storage Services Enabler (SSE) package provides the underlying infrastructure and programmatic interface to enable intelligent fabric applications when used with the Cisco MDS 9222i Multiservice Modular Switch (MMS), Cisco 18/4-Port Multiservice module (MSM-18/4), or Cisco MDS 9000 Storage Services Module (SSM). The SSE package enables the following storage applications:

Network-hosted storage applications: The Cisco MDS 9222i MMS, MSM-18/4, or MDS 9000 SSM enables network-hosted storage applications on Cisco MDS 9500 Series Multilayer Directors and Cisco MDS 9200 Series Multilayer Switches. The Cisco MDS 9000 SSE package enables these devices to host network-hosted storage applications by enabling the Intelligent Storage Application Programmatic Interface. Two storage applications are planned to be supported: EMC's Invista and Incipient's Network Storage Platform. Each requires the corresponding SSE package to be installed.

Network-assisted storage applications (SANTap): Within the Cisco MDS 9222i MMS, MDS-18/4, or MDS 9000 SSM, The Cisco MDS 9000 SSE package enables the switch to interface with storage applications by enabling the SANTap interface. SANTap intends to integrate with EMC's RecoverPoint and NetApp ReplicatorX's TDPS Fabric Edition storage applications; each requires the corresponding SSE package to enable interfacing with the applications.

The Cisco MDS 9000 SSE package can be used with Cisco MDS 9500 Multilayer Directors and Cisco MDS 9200 Series Multilayer Switches.

Software Release

To use the Cisco MDS 9000 SSE package on the Cisco MDS 9222i MMS or MSM-18/4, Cisco NX-OS 4.1(1) or later must be installed on the Cisco MDS switch. To use Cisco SSE package on the Cisco MDS 9000 SSM, Cisco SAN-OS 1.3(5) or later must be installed.

License Information

In the case of the Cisco MSM-18/4 or MDS 9000 SSM, the Cisco MDS 9000 SSE package is licensed on a per-module basis and is tied to the chassis. The number of licenses needed is equal to the number of MSM-18/4 or SSM appliances on which the intelligent fabric application feature is used. In the case of the Cisco MDS 9222i MMS, the Cisco SSE package is licensed per chassis.
