Cisco PoE Product Snapshot

The entire Cisco® Catalyst® Series of Intelligent Switches offer industry-leading performance, functionality, scalability, and flexibility. Cisco innovated years ago with the introduction of pre-standard Power over Ethernet (PoE), and the company is extending that leadership position by delivering IEEE 802.3af standard-based PoE in both 10/100 and 10/100/1000 Mbps configurations.

Cisco uniquely delivers 10/100/1000 Mbps ports that support 802.3af PoE; this configuration is supported in high densities for both the Catalyst 6500 and Catalyst 4500 switches. The combination of Gigabit Ethernet and PoE results in greater network optimization, user productivity and investment protection.

In addition, with PoE, customers do not need to provide wall power for each PoE enabled device. This eliminates the cost for additional electrical cabling that would otherwise be necessary for connected devices such as, IP telephones, wireless LAN access points, video surveillance cameras, building management systems, and remote video kiosks. Moreover, PoE allows businesses to isolate critical devices on a single power system, enabling the entire system to be supported by UPS backup.

What follows is a brief overview of the switching product lines and their PoE support.

Catalyst Modular Switching

The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series delivers a new 96-port 10/100 line card and 48-port 10/100 and 10/100/1000 line cards. The Catalyst 6500 Series offers a modular PoE daughter card architecture for the 96-port 10/100 card and the 48-port 10/100/1000 cards providing maximum flexibility and investment protection. As well, the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series delivers new 48-port 10/100 and 10/100/1000 line cards. All line cards support both IEEE 802.3af and Cisco pre-standard PoE. The cards are compatible with any Catalyst 6500 or 4500 chassis and supervisor engine, respectively. The Catalyst modular chassis switches can deliver 15.4W per port for all 48 ports on a module simultaneously.

Catalyst Stackable Switching

The Cisco Catalyst 3750 Series offers new 48- and 24-port Fast Ethernet switches that comply with IEEE 802.3af and Cisco pre-standard PoE. In addition, Cisco is introducing the Catalyst 3560 Series, a new line of 48- and 24-port Fast Ethernet switches that support both the new industry standard and the Cisco standard. The Catalyst 3550-24 PWR switch continues to support Cisco pre-standard PoE. All 24-port configurations support 24 simultaneous full powered PoE ports at 15.4 Watts for maximum powered device support. The 48-port configurations support 24 ports at 15.4 Watts, 48 ports at 7.7 Watts, or any combination in-between.

Cisco EtherSwitch Modules

The Cisco 36- and 16-port 10/100 EtherSwitch modules for Cisco 2600 and 3700 Series routers offer branch office customers the option to integrate switching and routing in one platform. These modules can support Cisco pre-standard PoE and provide straightforward configuration, easy deployment and integrated management in a single platform. The Cisco 2600 requires a separate external PoE power supply; the Cisco 3700 integrates the power supply.
