Safety Recommendations
Follow these guidelines to ensure general safety:
•
Keep the equipment area clear and dust-free during and after installation.
•
Keep tools away from walk areas where you and others could fall over them.
•
Do not wear loose clothing that could get caught in the chassis. Fasten ties or scarves and roll up shirt sleeves.
•
Do not wear jewelry such as rings, bracelets, or chains that may become caught in the chassis.
•
Wear safety glasses if you are working under conditions that might be hazardous to your eyes.
•
Do not perform any action that makes the equipment unsafe or creates a potential hazard to yourself or others.
Follow these guidelines when working on equipment powered by electricity:
•
Locate the emergency power-off switch for the room in which you are working. Then, if an electrical accident occurs, you can act quickly to turn off the power.
•
Disconnect all power by removing the fuses from the fuse and alarm panel before
–
Installing or removing a chassis
–
Working near power supplies
•
Do not work alone if potentially hazardous conditions exist.
•
Never assume that power is disconnected from a circuit; always check the circuit.
•
Look carefully for possible hazards in your work area such as moist floors, ungrounded power extension cables, frayed power cords, or missing safety grounds.
•
If an electrical accident occurs and someone is injured, proceed as follows:
–
Use caution; do not become a victim yourself.
–
Turn off power to the system.
–
If possible, send another person to get medical aid. Otherwise, assess the condition of the victim and then call for help.
–
Determine if the person needs rescue breathing or external cardiac compressions; then, take appropriate action.
•
Use the Cisco switch or gateway within their marked electrical ratings and product usage instructions.
•
Install the Cisco switch or gateway with the following local, national, or international electrical codes:

Equipment Attachment Limitations
An Industry Canada label identifies certified equipment. This certification means that the equipment meets certain telecommunications network protective, operational, and safety requirements. Industry Canada does not guarantee the equipment will operate to the user's satisfaction.
Before installing this equipment, users should ensure that it is permissible to be connected to the facilities of the local telecommunications company. The equipment must also be installed using an acceptable method of connection. In some cases, the companies inside wiring associated with a single line individual service may be extended by means of a certified connector assembly (telephone extension cord). The customer should be aware that compliance with the above conditions might not prevent degradation of service in some situations.
Repairs to certified equipment should be made by an authorized Canadian maintenance facility designated by the supplier. Any repairs or alterations made by the user to this equipment, or equipment malfunctions, may give the telecommunications company cause to request the user to disconnect the equipment.
Users should ensure for their own protection that the electrical ground connections of the power utility, telephone lines and internal metallic water pipe system, if present, are connected together. This precaution may be particularly important in rural areas.
Caution
Users should not attempt to make such connections themselves, but should contact the appropriate electric inspection authority, or electrician, as appropriate.

|

There are 3 types of Warnings in hardware manuals: EMC (electromagnetic compatibility), Safety, and Telecom. For new manuals, the Warning icon with the lightning bolt will only be used with Safety Warnings.
•
Warning statements are numbered. The numbering makes it clearer which Warning translation goes with which source Warning.
The 2004 Rev. B version of this document supports existing or "legacy" manuals, and a new manual. The legacy manuals were not updated as of the printing of this document. However the new Cisco MGX 8850 (PXM1E/PXM45), Cisco MGX 8950, Cisco MGX 8830, and Cisco MGX 8880 Hardware Installation Guide, Releases 2 Through 5 includes the changes mentioned above. This means Warnings in legacy documents remain unnumbered, and all Warnings in legacy documents use the lightning bolt icon.
Table 4 lists the titles, part numbers, and one sample online location of each hardware installation guide whose warnings are translated in the Rev. B0 version of this document. All the documents listed in Table 4 are legacy documents, except the new Cisco MGX 8850 (PXM1E/PXM45), Cisco MGX 8950, Cisco MGX 8830, and Cisco MGX 8880 Hardware Installation Guide, Releases 2 Through 5.

Reporting Security Problems in Cisco Products
Cisco is committed to delivering secure products. We test our products internally before we release them, and we strive to correct all vulnerabilities quickly. If you think that you have identified a vulnerability in a Cisco product, contact PSIRT:
•
For emergencies only — security-alert@cisco.com
An emergency is either a condition in which a system is under active attack or a condition for which a severe and urgent security vulnerability should be reported. All other conditions are considered nonemergencies.
•
For nonemergencies — psirt@cisco.com
In an emergency, you can also reach PSIRT by telephone:
•
1 877 228-7302
•
1 408 525-6532
Tip
We encourage you to use Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) or a compatible product (for example, GnuPG) to encrypt any sensitive information that you send to Cisco. PSIRT can work with information that has been encrypted with PGP versions 2.x through 9.x.
Never use a revoked encryption key or an expired encryption key. The correct public key to use in your correspondence with PSIRT is the one linked in the Contact Summary section of the Security Vulnerability Policy page at this URL:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/products_security_vulnerability_policy.html
The link on this page has the current PGP key ID in use.
If you do not have or use PGP, contact PSIRT to find other means of encrypting the data before sending any sensitive material.

To provide feedback about the Cisco.com website or a particular technical document, click Contacts & Feedback at the top of any Cisco.com web page.
Submitting a Service Request
Using the online TAC Service Request Tool is the fastest way to open S3 and S4 service requests. (S3 and S4 service requests are those in which your network is minimally impaired or for which you require product information.) After you describe your situation, the TAC Service Request Tool provides recommended solutions. If your issue is not resolved using the recommended resources, your service request is assigned to a Cisco engineer. The TAC Service Request Tool is located at this URL:
http://www.cisco.com/techsupport/servicerequest
For S1 or S2 service requests, or if you do not have Internet access, contact the Cisco TAC by telephone. (S1 or S2 service requests are those in which your production network is down or severely degraded.) Cisco engineers are assigned immediately to S1 and S2 service requests to help keep your business operations running smoothly.
To open a service request by telephone, use one of the following numbers:
Asia-Pacific: +61 2 8446 7411
Australia: 1 800 805 227
EMEA: +32 2 704 55 55
USA: 1 800 553 2447
For a complete list of Cisco TAC contacts, go to this URL:
http://www.cisco.com/techsupport/contacts
Definitions of Service Request Severity
To ensure that all service requests are reported in a standard format, Cisco has established severity definitions.
Severity 1 (S1)—An existing network is "down" or there is a critical impact to your business operations. You and Cisco will commit all necessary resources around the clock to resolve the situation.
Severity 2 (S2)—Operation of an existing network is severely degraded, or significant aspects of your business operations are negatively affected by inadequate performance of Cisco products. You and Cisco will commit full-time resources during normal business hours to resolve the situation.
Severity 3 (S3)—Operational performance of the network is impaired while most business operations remain functional. You and Cisco will commit resources during normal business hours to restore service to satisfactory levels.
Severity 4 (S4)—You require information or assistance with Cisco product capabilities, installation, or configuration. There is little or no effect on your business operations.
