About This Guide

This guide describes the components of the Cisco 10005 edge services router (ESR) and explains how to maintain the system.

This section describes the audience, purpose, organization, and conventions used in this guide. There is also a list of related documents and instructions for obtaining technical assistance and additional information.

Audience

To use this publication, you should be familiar not only with Cisco router hardware and cabling, but also with electronic circuitry and wiring practices. You should have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.

Purpose

This guide helps you understand the functions of the components of the Cisco 10005 ESR, and provides procedures for maintaining the system. Maintenance tasks include shutting down the system, backing up the PCMCIA card, and removing and replacing field-replaceable units (FRUs).

Document Organization

This publication is organized as follows:

•"Cisco 10005 Edge Services Router Overview," describes the Cisco 10005 components and a gives functional overview of the system.

•"Connecting Data Cables," shows how to connect data cables and management devices to the Cisco 10005 chassis.

•"Maintaining the Cisco 10005 ESR," describes the procedures required to perform routine maintenance and to remove and replace field replaceable units (FRUs) in the Cisco 10005.

•"Technical Specifications," contains the electrical, environmental, and physical specifications for the Cisco 10005.

•Index

Document Conventions

Command descriptions use these conventions:

•Commands and key words are in bold text.

•Arguments for which you supply values are in italic text.

•Optional elements are in square brackets [ ].

•Alternative but required keywords are grouped in braces { } and separated by vertical bars |.

Examples use these conventions:

•Examples that contain system prompts denote interactive sessions, indicating the commands that you should enter at the prompt. The system prompt indicates the current level of the EXEC command interpreter.

For example, the prompt router> indicates that you should be at the user level, and the prompt router# indicates that you should be at the privileged level. Access to the privileged level usually requires a password. Refer to the related software configuration and reference documentation for additional information.

•Terminal sessions and sample console screen displays are in screen font.

•Information you enter is in bold font.

•Nonprinting characters, such as passwords, are in angle brackets < >.

•Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets [ ].

•Exclamation points ! at the beginning of a line indicate a comment line.

Notes and Cautions

Notes and cautions contain important information that you should be aware of.

Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this publication.

Caution Means reader be careful. You are capable of doing something that might result in equipment damage or loss of data.

Safety warnings appear throughout this publication in procedures that, if performed incorrectly, may harm you.

Before you install, configure, or perform maintenance on the router, review the documentation for the procedure you are about to perform, paying special attention to the safety warnings. Technical Assistance Center

The Cisco TAC is available to all customers who need technical assistance with a Cisco product, technology, or solution. Two types of support are available through the Cisco TAC: the Cisco TAC Web Site and the Cisco TAC Escalation Center.

Inquiries to Cisco TAC are categorized according to the urgency of the issue:

•Priority level 4 (P4)—You need information or assistance concerning Cisco product capabilities, product installation, or basic product configuration.

•Priority level 3 (P3)—Your network performance is degraded. Network functionality is noticeably impaired, but most business operations continue.

•Priority level 2 (P2)—Your production network is severely degraded, affecting significant aspects of business operations. No workaround is available.

•Priority level 1 (P1)—Your production network is down, and a critical impact to business operations will occur if service is not restored quickly. No workaround is available.

Which Cisco TAC resource you choose is based on the priority of the problem and the conditions of service contracts, when applicable.

Cisco TAC Web Site

The Cisco TAC Web Site allows you to resolve P3 and P4 issues yourself, saving both cost and time. The site provides around-the-clock access to online tools, knowledge bases, and software. To access the Cisco TAC Web Site, go to the following URL:

All customers, partners, and resellers who have a valid Cisco services contract have complete access to the technical support resources on the Cisco TAC Web Site. Cisco TAC Escalation Center

The Cisco TAC Escalation Center addresses issues that are classified as priority level 1 or priority level 2; these classifications are assigned when severe network degradation significantly impacts business operations. When you contact the TAC Escalation Center with a P1 or P2 problem, a Cisco TAC engineer will automatically open a case.

Before you call, check with your network operations center to determine the level of Cisco support services to which your company is entitled; for example, SMARTnet, SMARTnet Onsite, or Network Supported Accounts (NSA).
