Installing the CWM Client

This chapter describes how to install the CWM Client on the CWM. See these sections:

Setting Up a Windows CWM Client

Setting Up a Solaris CWM Client

Launching the CWM Client

As a CWM component, the CWM Client enables you to access and use the CWM server in a network. CWM Client is a Java-based software package that is designed to run on a Sun Solaris or a Windows 2000 client machine under the Sun Microsystem Java Web Start utility.

To launching the client software in the client machine, you must download the CWM client application Java jar files to that machine and then start the client program. This process is managed from the client machine through the following software that must be installed on the client machine:

Web browser

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) software

Sun Microsystem Java Web Start tool

On the client machine, you can download CWM Client and start the program using one of these methods:

1. Start the web browser, connect to the CWM server (http://cwmserver:1551/ where cwmserver is the name of your CWM server machine), and click any CWM client application. You must use this method the first time you launch the CWM.

2. If a CWM client desktop shortcut has been created, you can click the desktop icon to launch the application after you have launched the client one time using the first method above.

The Java Web Start installation registers the .jnlp file extension and the application/x-java-jnlp-file MIME type with the web browsers, which enables Java Web Start to be launched from the browser when a link to a JNLP file is activated.

If you install the web browser after Web Start has been installed, you have to set the MIME type or reinstall Web Start, which will automatically set the JNLP MIME type. To manually set the MIME type in Netscape, to the following:

1. Choose Edit > Preferences > Navigator > Helper Applications

2. Set the file extension to jnlp and the MIME type to application/x-java-jnlp-file.

If the CWM Client software has previously been downloaded and cached, Java Web Start contacts the CWM server and checks to see if a newer version of the CWM Client software exists. If a newer version does exist, the new version is downloaded, cached, and launched.

Setting Up a Windows CWM Client

This section describes how to set up the Windows-based CWM Java Client. For additional information about Java Web Start, see Basic System Data. For detailed requirements for the CWM client, see CWM Client Requirements.

The PC-based CWM client can be used with Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) or Netscape. Windows IE is installed on your PC. You must download and install Netscape off the Internet.

See these sections:

Setting Up the Browser

Use this procedure to set up your web browser.

Step 1 Set the brower path, as follows:

a. Locate the appropriate browser executable file: netscape.exe for Netscape and Iexplore.exe for IE. Note its path. The default paths for these files are:

C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer

b. On the desktop, right click on the My Computer icon. Select Properties.

c. Click on the Advanced tab. Click on the Environment Variables button.

d. On the Variable Value line, append a semicolon;, followed by the path noted in Step 1.

For example, if using Netscape Communicator, append,

;C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program

e. Click OK.

Step 2 If you want to make Netscape the browser, use this procedure to change from IE to Netscape.

a. Quit Netscape and start IE.

b. Click Tools > Internet Options > Programs and uncheck the "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default" check box. (IE versions may have slightly different menus). Then exit IE.

c. From the Windows Start menu, choose Search > For Files or Folders to find the file named prefs.js. This file is typically under Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Netscape\Users\default\. (Several copies of this file my exist if the workstation has multiple users or multiple versions of Netscape have been installed.)

d. Using Windows Explorer, rename prefs.js to prefs.sav.js.

e. Start Netscape, and when Netscape asks if you want it to be the default browser, choose Yes. Then exit Netscape.

f. Remove the new prefs.js and rename the prefs.sav.js to prefs.js.

Installing the Java Tools

Use this procedure to install the Java tools on the CWM Client. You must use the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) Java Runtime Environment (JRE), version 1.4.2, which is is included in the CWM Server CD-ROM.

It is stored in the CWM server machine automatically when the CWM server software is installed and is then available for downloading to the CWM client machine.

Step 1 Ensure that the web browser is installed and running on the client machine.

Step 2 Connect to the CWM server machine using its workstation name followed by:1551, such as http://cwmhost:1551 or http://cwmhost.company.com:1551. (1551 is the software port number for the CWM Client web page.) The CWM server displays the CWM Client Launcher web page.

Step 3 In the CWM Client Launcher, click the Help tab for the link to the latest J2SE v 1.4.2 Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for Solaris and Windows:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Step 4 Follow the instructions for installing J2SE 1.4.2 on Solaris and Windows.

(Installing J2RE also installs Java Web Start automatically.)

Setting Up a Solaris CWM Client

This section describes how to set up the Solaris-based CWM Java Client.

Configuring Netscape for Web Start

Setting Up the Browser

Use this procedure to set up the Solaris version of Netscape, which must be used on a Solaris-based CWM client.

The Sun Microsystems Netscape Communicator for the Solaris package (version 4.76) is included on the Cisco-provided CWM Documentation CD-ROM under the file name of NSCPcom.476.sparc.tar.

Step 1 Log in to the CWM workstation as user root.

Step 2 Insert the CWM Documentation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.

Step 3 Ensure that Netscape file (NSCPcom.476.sparc.tar) is present on the CD in the 1500tools directory by changing to the tools directory and listing the files:

# cd /cdrom/cdrom0/1500tools
# ls

Step 4 Copy the file to the workstation hard drive:

cp /cdrom/cdrom0/1500tools/NSCPcom.476.sparc.tar /tmp

Step 5 Copy the gzip utility to the workstation hard drive:

cp /cdrom/cdrom0/1500tools/gzip /tmp

If the CWM CD-ROM is not available on the client machine, it should be inserted in the CWM server CD-ROM drive. Use the FTP facility to transfer the NSCPcom.476.sparc.tar and the gzip files to the /tmp directory in the client machine. This method has the same effect as performing Steps 1 through 4.

Step 6 Change to a temporary location, such as the /tmp directory:

cd /tmp

Step 7 Change the permission of the copied gzip file so that it can be executed:

chmod 1555 /tmp gzip

Step 8 Unzip the Netscape file and untar it:

./gzip -d /tmp/NSCPcom.476.sparc.tar
tar xvf /tmp/NSCPcom.476.sparc.tar

Step 9 Install Netscape Communicator:

pkgadd -d /tmp NSCPcom

The pkgadd command installs the Netscape Communicator package in the /opt/NSCPcom directory.

Step 10 Add the /opt/NSCPcom directory to the Path variable.

Installing Java Tools

(1551 is the software port number for the CWM Client web page.)

Step 3 In the CWM Client Launcher, click the Help tab for the link to the latest J2SE v 1.4.2 Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for Solaris and Windows:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Step 4 Follow the instructions for installing J2SE 1.4.2 on Solaris and Windows:

a. Access the Solaris self-extracting file from the above J2SE website and download it. Save it to a temporary location, such as the /tmp directory.

b. Login as root to install J2SE v1.4.2 in /usr and type these commands:

# cd /usr

# chmod +x /tmp/j2re-1_4_2_01-solaris-sparc.sh

# /tmp/j2re-1_4_2_01-solaris-sparc.sh

c. Accept the license agreement.

These steps install J2RE v1.4.2 in the /usr/j2re1.4.2_01 directory. Web Start is installed in the /usr/j2re1.4.2_01/javaws directory.

Configuring Netscape for Web Start

Use this procedure to configure Netscape for you on the CWM Client. The J2SE installation script updates the $HOME/.mailcap and $HOME/.mime.types files for the user who installed the JRE. (These files enable Netscape to invoke Web Start when a JNLP link is encountered.)

However, since the JRE installation is usually run as root, other users need to manually update their own $HOME/.mailcap and $HOME/.mime.types files for Netscape to recognize the Web Start applications.

If Web Start is installed in /usr/javaws directory, make these changes.

Step 1 Add this line in the $HOME/.mailcap directory:

Step 2 application/x-java-jnlp-file; /usr/javaws/javaws %s

Step 3 Add this line in the $HOME/.mime.types directory:

type=application/x-java-jnlp-file desc="Java Web Start" exts="jnlp"

The software license agreement window appears.

Step 4 Click Yes to accept the agreement.

The J2SE 1.4.2 is now installed in the /usr directory.

Configuring Java Plug-In 1.4.2

Use this procedure to set the path to the plug-in in the .cshrc file. This step is necessary on Solaris based clients.

Step 1 Start an editor and open the .cshrc file in the /usr/users/svplus directory.

Step 2 Add the following line to the .cshrc file:

setenv NPX_PLUGIN_PATH /usr/j2re1_4_2/plugin/sparc/ns4

Step 3 Save the changes and close the editor.

Entering the source .cshrc command causes the Path change to take effect immediately.

Launching the CWM Client

This section describes how to launch the CWM client.

The first time (only the first time) that the CWM client is launched, you must start the web browser and connect to the CWM server to display the CWM Client Launch page.

After the client has been launched for the first time, you can launch the client either through the web browser or through a CWM application desktop shortcut icon.

In each case the CWM Client is launched. The software is downloaded or not from the CWM server depending upon whether it is resident in the client machine. Any local copy of CWM Client is checked at the server to see if it is the latest version. If it is not, the most current version is downloaded and launched. This feature ensures that if a later version CWM Client is installed on the CWM server, it will automatically be available at the client machine.

Web Browser Method

To launch CWM Client using the web browser, perform the following steps.

Step 1 Check that the web browser is installed and running on the client machine.

Step 2 Connect to the CWM server machine using its workstation name followed by :1551, such as http://cwmhost:1551 or http://cwmhost.company.com:1551. (1551 is the software port number for the CWM Client web page.)

Step 3 The CWM server machine displays its web page.

Step 4 To launch a CWM application, click one of the menu items.

Desktop Shortcut Method

To add a CWM Client application desktop shortcuts, perform the following steps:

Step 1 Ensure that the web browser is installed and running on the client machine.

Step 2 Connect to the CWM server using its workstation name followed by:1551, such as http://cwmhost:1551 or http://cwmhost.company.com:1551).

1551 is the software port number for the CWM Client web page.

Step 3 Drag any of the CWM applications launch points to the desktop.
