Introduction

This chapter provides an introduction to the Cisco WAN Manager (CWM) Release 15 and provides an overview of the CWM 15 installation and upgrade procedures.

CWM is a software product that provide a rich set of management features for Cisco wide area networks. Cisco CWM can be installed as a CWM server, a CWM client, a standalone CWM statistics manager, or as a standalone CWM statistics collector.

In an operational CWM network management system, there must be at least one CWM server. There may be none, one, or several CWM clients and standalone CWM statistics collectors. CWM Release 15 supports integration with the Cisco Info Center so that the two applications can function together.

The CWM Release 15 is comprised of a set of software components. Some of these components are Cisco products and some are third party products. Some are provided as part of the CWM package and some the user must obtain from third party sources.

The following table lists the components that make up the CWM 15 package.

Table 1-1 CWM Components

Note The basic CWM product is distributed as a two-CD-ROM set.

CD-ROM Number 1 contains the CWM server installation package.
CD-ROM Number 2 contains documentation, Adobe Acrobat, and other tools.

The CWM SNMP Service Agent, the SCMSA, and WANDEST are each distributed on their own CD-ROMs. The SNMP Service Agent CD-ROM also contains the tar file for updating the Cisco Info Center so that it can function with CWM.

CWM Configurations

The installation and upgrade procedures permit the user to install the CWM components in various combinations according to the user's starting point and the desired ending CWM configurations. These two parameters determine which programs or components need to be installed or upgraded and in which sequence.

Table 1-2. provides a brief summary of the installation or upgrade procedures that are involved in each of the starting and ending configuration combinations.

CWM 15 server workstation with a Solaris 8 platform

Requires CWM 15 server and the CWM SNMP Service Agent (if used) to be upgraded.

Existing CWM 11 server workstation with a Solaris 7 platform

CWM 15 server workstation with a Solaris 8 platform

Requires existing databases to be exported, Solaris 8 and any relevant patches to be installed, and the databases restored. Requires CWM 15 server and the CWM SNMP Service Agent (if used) to be installed.

From scratch using a new workstation

CWM 15 server workstation

A new workstation, probably received from Sun Microsystems with Solaris 8 or Solaris 9 already installed. Needs everything to be installed including Solaris 8 and the appropriate CWM modules.

Solaris based workstation

Solaris client workstation

Requires an available CWM Server. In the Client machine an Internet browser, a Java Runtime Environment, and Java Web Start must be installed. CWM Client is downloaded and launched from the CWM server using Java Web Start.

Windows based workstation

PC client workstation

Requires an available CWM Server. In the Client machine an Internet browser, a Java Runtime Environment, and Java Web Start must be installed. CWM Client is downloaded and launched from the CWM server using Java Web Start.

Solaris based workstation

Statistics Collection Manager Standalone

Requires the installation of Solaris 8 and the Standalone.Statistics Manager. Requires WANDEST server to be installed in the CWM server machine.

Existing SCMSA 11 or 12 workstation with a Solaris 8 platform

Standalone Statistics Manager and Standalone Statistics Collector workstations with a Solaris 8 platform

Can be upgraded to a Standalone Stats Collector only. Solaris 8 and any relevant patches to be installed. Requires the databases to be restored. Requires SCMSA to be installed.

Upgrade Limitations

CWM Release 15 can be upgraded from the following releases. Upgrading implies that the existing databases can be converted and used in the upgraded version.

CWM Release 11.0.10 (latest patch) both Solaris 7 and Solaris 8 versions.

CWM Release 12.0.10 (latest patch).

To upgrade to CWM Release 15, users of earlier CWM releases must first upgrade to one of the releases listed above.

Installation or Upgrade Sequences

This section describes the sequence of operations for the various CWM installations and upgrades

CWM Server

Table 1-3 shows the sequence of operations that should be followed when performing a CWM 15 server installation or upgrade.

Table 1-3 CWM Server Sequence of Operations

Operation
Notes

Export databases

This operation is required only if upgrading from a Solaris 7 to Solaris 8 platform.

Install Solaris 8

Solaris 8 is required if it is not installed in the starting configuration.

Install Solaris patches required for CWM

The patch numbers and the details of how to obtain them are included in the CWM 15 Release Notes.

Install HP OpenView 6.2 or 6.3 (optional)

This package is not essential to the operation of CWM.
HP OpenView is used in conjunction with the SNMP Service Agent and for viewing the Event Log. It is not required for any other CWM procedures. It is not required for a Statistics Collection Manager Standalone workstation.

Install or upgrade CWM server, restore database if upgrading.

This process also installs the web based version of CWM client, Java Web Start, and JRE 1.2.2 in the CWM server.

Install CWM SNMP Service Agent

The SNMP Service Agent is used for flow through provisioning of PNNI SPVC supported by both Cisco BPX SES and Cisco MGX 8850 Release 2 networks. It is not required for a Standalone Statistics Collection Manager workstation.

Cisco Info Center Product Integration Policy Packs

CWM Release 15 includes a Cisco Info Center Product Integration Policy Pack. A policy pack is a software package that can be installed to update the event processing provided by the Cisco Info Center application. Policy packs are provided as necessary when Cisco Info Center processing rules or tools for Cisco WAN Manager events are changed.

The Cisco Info Center Product Integration Policy Pack for CWM Release 15 includes a tar file that can be installed using the Cisco Info Center update utility (nco_update). The Product Integration Policy Pack is provided in on the SNMPAgent CD-ROM, in a tar file that the update utility can process.

The update utility is a tool that is used to install new rules, enhancements, and new lookups necessary for CIC to function with CWM Release 15.

Install the Cisco Info Center updates for CWM 15.0 on the host that is running the Cisco Info Center RTTrapd Info Mediator.

Note To update the Cisco Info Center installation, Cisco Info Center release 3.5 or 3.6 must already be installed in your CWM environment.
