Cisco Acquires Starent Networks
In December 2009, Cisco completed its acquisition of Starent Networks, a leading supplier of IP-based mobile infrastructure solutions for mobile and converged network operators. Starent Networks has become Cisco's new Mobile Internet Technology Group (MITG) within the Service Provider Group (SPG).
As IP-enabled smartphones and other mobile devices rapidly gain popularity, mobile operators must keep pace with the corresponding surge in data traffic. Global mobile data traffic is expected to more than double every year through 2013, according to the Cisco Visual Networking Index.(VNI) forecast for 2009-2014. Starent’s solutions help operators quickly scale their mobile infrastructures to accommodate traffic growth -- and profit from it by offering high-performance, personalized services.
Starent platforms provide the subscriber and network intelligence, core network functions, and services to manage and control access from any 2.5G, 3G, and 4G radio network to a mobile operator's packet core network. Starent Networks' access-independent technology can be deployed in CDMA2000 (1xEV-DO), UMTS/HSPA, and WiMAX networks.
