CHINESE E-GOVERNMENT: MOVING ON FROM 'WEB-GLOSS'? - The good news is that Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao seems determined to use technology as a mechanism to support administrative reform. Blink and you may have missed it, but China's political leadership gave a strong endorsement to the role of IT-enabled government in the country. AUSTRALIAN GOVT URGED TO PROTECT INFRASTRUCTURE— An Australian government think AUSTRALIAN SENATE INITIATES PROBE ON TELSTRA — The senate gave the go-ahead for a detailed investigation of Australia's telecommunications regulatory regime and the privatization of Telstra. DREAM OF AN OPTICS NETWORK FOR BUSH - A Nationals think tank has proposed that the proceeds from the sale of Telstra be used to roll out a $7billion fibre optic cable network in the bush. Supporters of the "glass Snowy" project claim it would deliver high-speed internet access and other digital services to all but the most remote areas of Australia. ASIAN TELECOM SECTOR SLOWS, BUT GROWTH TO CONTINUE —Asia’s telecom sector is showing flat growth, despite a recovery from the crisis in 2003, a recent IDC report said. However, the region (excluding Japan) will continue to post growth in the next five years. CHINA CHOOSES NORTEL FOR MOBILE NETWORK ON RAILWAY TO TIBET—China's Railways Ministry has selected Nortel to provide a digital wireless communications network for the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. MOBILE TARIFFS IN INDIA MAY FALL AGAIN— Indian regulators will come out with another consultation paper to review tariffs, which could further slash long distance rates. INDIA WANTS MINIMUM 256 KBPS FOR BROADBAND—The government has issued instructions to all telecom service providers to refrain from offering broadband services at a download speed of less than 256 kbps. INDIA: 30% OF MOBILE USERS LOOKING FOR BETTER OPERATORS — Despite doling out low tariffs and feature-rich value-added services, mobile operators in India may have to do a lot more to keep subscribers. INDIA'S NON-VOICE MARKET EXPANDS 139% IN 2004—IDC India said that the country’s non-voice market within the mobile telephony segment grew by 139% in 2004 over the previous year. INDONESIA: REGULATORS DEFEND 3G OPERATOR — The Telecommunications Regulating Agency (BRTI) came to the defense of Cyber Access Communications, saying the licensed operator of 3G did not violate any rules. KOREAN OPERATORS TO BUILD MOBILE FACILITIES ON DISPUTED ISLETS — South Korean mobile operators SK Telecom and KTF have said that they are planning to build mobile phone facilities on the disputed islets of Dokdo in the East Sea. MALAYSIA 'UNWIRES' 800 SCHOOLS— The Ministry of Education and Intel Malaysia launched the national "Wireless Technology" project, which will equip some 800 schools with wireless Internet access by the end of the year. PHILIPPINE BROADBAND PROVIDERS EYE SMES — Competition among telecom companies in the Philippines has extended to the high-speed broadband service with both PLDT and Globe targeting small and medium enterprises (SMEs). JAPANESE MUNICIPALITIES UNWIRED – NTT Com recently conducted a field trial in Tokyo using Tropos MetroMesh routers and the Tropos Control element manager and selected the company's wireless routers for use in building a wireless network for Iwakuni Air Station, a U.S. Marine Corps Air Station in Japan. |

FLORIDA WORKS TO KILL POTENTIAL VOIP TAX— Internet telephony supporters won a big victory in Florida last week when legislators voted in favor of repealing part of a communications tax on businesses that run their own networks IOWA GOV. SIGNS TELECOMMUNICATIONS DEREGULATION BILL – Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack signed House File 277 on Tuesday, an Act that deregulates the local exchange retail phone rates of the three Iowa companies that remain rate regulated by the Iowa Utilities Board. CHICAGO STUDIES WI-FI – Under threat from a possible state law that would prevent municipalities from acting as utilities to run their own broadband networks, Chicago city government officials authorized a study of a possible citywide high-speed wireless network. |
