Cisco Announces the Acquisition of ClearAccess

Acquisition enhances Cisco's network management capabilities, enabling Service Providers to better deliver, manage and monetize their services.

On May 1, 2012 Cisco announced it acquired privately held ClearAccess, a provider of TR-069-based software to service providers for the provisioning and management of residential and mobile devices. This acquisition includes ClearAccess's software business and talent. The hardware portion of the ClearAccess business, Smart RG Gateways, is moving forward as a separate company owned by SmartRG.

ClearAccess management and software capabilities will augment Cisco Prime - Cisco's network management software portfolio - by offering service providers a set of powerful capabilities that include sophisticated tools for provisioning, monitoring and managing bandwidth usage, parental controls, and diagnostics to connected devices in the home.

Q: What is Cisco acquiring?
A: Cisco is announcing its intent to acquire ClearAccess, a company that provides TR-069 standards-based, cloud and on-site management software for residential and mobile devices that will become part of the Cisco Prime network management portfolio. The platform provides service providers with advanced Consumer Premise Equipment (CPE) management capabilities that address the growing need for automatic subscriber activation, remote CPE activation and new incremental revenue streams. Service providers also will be allowed visibility into and management of "unmanaged" devices at the IP level.

Q: How does this acquisition align to Cisco's five priorities?
A: Cisco Prime network management software is a key component to Cisco's strategy and can be applied across Cisco's top five priorities. The ClearAccess acquisition reinforces Cisco's commitment to service providers by accelerating architectural plays across key areas for the company - mobility, cloud and managed services, and Videoscape. This aligns with Cisco's strategic initiatives - to build software platforms and drive business and technology architectures.
